Metal Refinishing
#1

I think I am about at the 1/2 point of my engine cleaning / minor upgrade project - Cam cover, intake manifold and fuel rail cover out to the metal shop today. Everything is going to get glass beaded as a start - get rid of that nasty yellow film gunk I mentioned in a different post...

So - should I stop there - everything will be nice and shiny with the clean but flat aluminum finish...but not chromey (which is how I want it) - but any ideas on if I should paint too...or should I leave as is? What would be best - and look the best?

I have found that the cam cover and intake manifold look better with a coat of exterior aluminum metal paint. The original color of the metal was not aluminum color, but leaned toward gray a bit to far for my taste. A simple rag application worked out well.

IMHO, do not use paint, Send it out for powder coating. Or leave natural.

Or loose your finger prints and try polishing. Not to everyones taste.

I actually put some aluminum paint on another piece, and it came out a bit too "shiny" for what I am looking for - a bit on the silver side almost - Brian how shiny did yours turn out? I do wonder about painting to protect the metal, etc...and maybe that would be the best route to go...

Polishing looks beautiful - but not the look I'm going for...have thought about power coating too - too many options!

Here is a quick shot.

You judge the "shiny intensity"

Actually that looks nice - pretty much what I'm going for - have you had any rubbing from the strut brace?

No,about 0.2 inches clearance. ( 3+ pennies )

Get it, you will love the way the car handles with it and installation is a snap.

I got mine before RS Barn had their bar. It has even more clearance than the unit I am running. If I had to do it now, I'd get the RS unit.

P.S. Get the "PORSCHE" letters from Jager Engineering to complete the cover. I tried painting and, in person, it does not look as nice; not even close!

Speaking of Veronique...I sent her a template for a hood liner for the 968. I'll install it on mine. The liner that I had before rubbed on the strut brace and the front of the engine due to the thickness of the liner and the fact that it is aluminum faced. Leaves nasty black marks on the metal that it rubbed on. The liner takes away the top end high frequency noise, which has the net effect of increasing the exhaust tone.

When the liner prototype arrives I'll post a picture. I believe that it will be added to the existing line of hood liners when we are done.

Powder coating has some translucent color options that look pretty cool. I t lets the metal base show through and has great depth. Could be a bit much... I saw it on 2 guys garage or something.

I would like to restore my cam cover.  Looks like Porsche painted these and I've have areas which have chipped away over time where the original paint texture is gone in those locations. I'm trying to restore it in a way that it looks new again.

How much should I budget for this and what kind of process should I be looking for?

I'm not having any luck getting call backs for estimates during this CV-19 thing.

I'm in the Portland, Oregon area if anyone has any recommendations for who to contact.

finally got an estimate back. ~$175 USD for powder coating the cam cover.  May I assume that's inline to what others have gotten?
