In the process of upgrading my stereo system, I've been adding a sheet of sound dampening material here and there in an effort to make my car quieter.
I don't think I want to remove the entire interior of my car to cover every square inch with Dynamat Extreme, so I am interested in what other's have found to be the most effective places to add sound reduction stuff (or any other strategy to reduce road noise).

So far, I have added a few sheets to the inner surface of the door exterior sheet metal, and applied a spray-on sound dampener inside the rear fenders from the rear speaker mounting holes (to get around all of the curved surfaces in there). Also added a sheet on the rear fender just above the passenger side storage cubby.

My car is a coupe.

a big start would be under the carpet in the rear, the spare tire well, and anywhere you can reach in on the wheel wells and cubbies

I know you are a proponent of Dynamat Extreme (I remember you mentioning it in another thread).
Any thoughts on the relative effectiveness of D.E. vs. other products.
I have used the "lightweight vinyl sound damping sheets" and "sound dampening spray" that I picked up from Parts Express along with my amp wiring, etc.

I just did my car with B-Quiet. It tests the same as Dynamat Extreme but if far cheaper than Dynamat. Installation was easy, I did the rear deck, cubbies, spare tire, and both doors.

I'm assuming you went with the B-Quiet ultimate? How much did you buy? What areas did you do? I'm thinking of doing it as well but I'm hoping for a few more details from you? Also, as Jamie asked, what is your opinion on the "after" part?

Yes I went with the ultimate. I bought 50 sq ft and have a little under 1/2 a roll left. I did the back deck, spare tire hole, cubbies including the wheel well inside, inside the doors as far as I could reach as there is only a small access hole plus the whole door behind the leatherette panel and inside the rear speaker compartments before I did the dryer hose/foam mod.
It's definitly quieted down the road noise and the doors now "clunk" when you close them - you know that quality, Veyron kind of sound [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif[/img]

Ha! So, I'm guessing that the project is something that you would recommend or would at least say is worth it? Did you expect more sound deadening or were you surprised at how much it helped? Sorry for the 20 questions...

jamie - i am indeed a proponent of dynamat for no other reason than i know it works - cost was not an object, and i didn't want to do that painful bloodletting job twice - that made the decision easy - that is not to say that others don't do the job too - i've seen test charts and b-quiet and dynamat seem almost identical (not sure it was the extreme or not)

I think it was worth doing, it didn't take that long and I like to tinker. It's the perfect full morning project on a nice day with your coffee in hand and the tunes up. I would have liked to do the Full Monty but I wasn't keen on ripping out all the carpet on the floor and rear seats. I have encountered Porsches nasty rubber cement before and feared having to destroy my interior to get it free from the frame. So, consequently, there is still some road noise underneath you but then I am not trying for a Maybach anyway.

I'm particularly anxious to add some damping material around the wheel wells, as you suggest Flash.
It was raining here the past 2 days and when the road is wet there is <b>a lot </b>of noise that seems to come from the wheel well
It's so loud, it almost sounds like there is an opening somewhere.
Not sure if this is common to the 968 for some reason (my old 944 didn't have this issue), or my car is missing something.
Anybody else with a coupe notice this?

I think the effect was helped a bit when I put new speakers in the rear and added foam baffles around them. It seemed like noise was coming up from the wheel well and through the paper cone of the speakers. I expect it will get quieter when I finally get around to doing the rear speaker chamber sealing mod.

Adding anything under the carpet seems like a huge pain, as you noted, Dave, due to the glue. I don't know how you would get it off the metal surfaces so that the Dynamat, etc. would get a good bond to the surface.

some tires are very noisy it the wet too - unfortunately they are also the ones that are generally best performing in the wet - in cutting through the water, they send a jet of it against the wheel well

adding the material there will help a lot

This may seem like an obviously dumb question, but would there be any noticeable improvement in a cab. I know that the soft top will never offer the great sound insulation from wind/road/etc. But I can't help but feel that adding some dampening to prevent road noise from coming through the car (wheel wells for example) may help.
Thoughts? or am I just ridiculous...

On another sound related note... My 968 has an aftermarket shifter which (from reading way back when) is much lighter than the stock shifter and vibrates (and noisier) a bit more than I would like. Any recommendations?

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i've done both of my cab and it was a wonderful improvement - keep in mind that the frequency to which the material dampens is limited - it will not stock very low frequencies, but it does dampen low mids on up

Hi all,
I recommend doing it, esp if you are doing something in the car at the same time. I also added (not extrme so it is not shiny) under the hood
section that is over the air intake where the washer nozzles are located.
Results are worth it imo. Music sounds better in the coupe, even heard some wind noise at speed whereas only road noise before.
conversation is easier too. I agree with flash, low-mids and high frequencies but not the lowwws. For that, put in a sub.

Bet Flash didn't think of this one. I added Dynamat extreme in the fuse box cover, you can remove the fuse location card (slowly) and I cut a piece of extreme a little smaller
and put the card over it so you can't see it. The reason I did this was I realized I can see into the interior of the car when I removed the cover.
I think it made a difference or maybe not so much .

So try it and give feedback..

Last weekend, I added the B-quiet Extreme to the rear deck and wheel wheels of my coupe. It certainly made a difference. I also remember Dan saying that he added a rubber liner or set of rubber mats under his floor mats and it helped quite a bit. Well, I added the B-quiet to the underside of my new Lloyds front and rear and it helped quite a bit. I then heard the rubber seals squeaking and the wind noise instead of the road noise. So, with Flash's recommendation, I put the purple tire gel on my seals and everything is so much quieter. I am not going for a Maybach either but it certainly puts the road noise on par with newer Porsches. I can imagine if one were to get ambitious (door panels, rear speakers, etc.) that the car can become pretty quiet.

I'm very happy with the road noise now...
