M030 Conversion info
#1

What did the M030 option include?

Posted by Raj Datta at 968.net

17 inch wheels

Front Bigger brakes with bigger calipers as well( 928 S4 kind)

Front and rear cross drilled rotors

30mm Front sway bar, 19 mm rear 3 way adjustable sway bar.

Usually comes with option 220 (lsd)

Adjustable shocks, front are adjustable for ride height and rebound damping.

Helper springs on rear shocks.

The front hubs/spindles are different as far as mouting points are concerned.

It was almost a $3k option. If you were to price all the items seperately, its close to $6k.

Posted on the PCA 968 Q&A area:

I just purchased a 93' Porsche 968. It came with the factory 17" wheels. I checked the list of option codes in the hatchback area and there was no listing for M030. What are the modifications required to upgrade a standard suspension to the M030? Also, how would the handling change if I put on 16" wheels? I use the car as a daily driver, but want to get into autocross and track events. Thanks! Pete

You will need the following to convert to 968 M030:

951.341.655.34 steering knuckle 951.341.656.34 steering knuckle 951.341.065.08 hub (2 needed) 944.343.031.28 left koni shock 944.343.032.28 right koni shock 944.343.531.01 springs 951.343.524.00 adjusting nut (need 2) 951.343.525.32 concave washer (need 2) 951.343.529.30 boot (need 2) 133.412.341 concave washer (need 2) 999.703.355.40 cap (need 2) 944.343.706.30 front swaybar 944.343.794.05 bushing (need 2) 951.343.793.31 bushing (need 2) N.012.449.1 lock washer (need 2) 944.333.032.03 koni rear shock (need 2) 951.333.531.31.504 rear springs 944.333.526.01 concave washer (need 2) 944.333.701.01 19 mm rear swaybar for manual trans 964.333.792.00 rubber mounting (need 2) 965.351.041.01 driver side brake rotor 965.351.042.01 passenger side brake rotor 928.351.421.03 driver side caliper 928.351.422.03 passenger side caliper 900.067154.023 bolts (need 4) N.011.564.2 washer (need 4) 993.351.939.01 brake pads set 928.351.950.00 spring (need 2) 928.351.971.00 brake line (need 2) 951.351.089.03 vibration damper

The handling would not be as crisp with 16 inch wheels, due to the additional height of the sidewalls.

The spindles are a heavier, more robust design, in addition to having different mounting points for the bigger S4 brake calipers. Highly desireable for track applications, especially if you are running Charlie Arms/delrin bushings.

I've put a page together listing the 968 M030 parts.

I originally started with George's list and did some additional digging. George's list missed a few M030 parts (e.g. wheels). Also, I believe the correct p/n for the front springs is 944.343.531.01.104.

The page can be found at http://www.weissach.net/968_M030-Option.html

If anyone sees errors, omissions or misleading information on that page, please let me know.

Thanks.

The Limited slip (220) is a seperate option in and of itself. However you would be hard pressed to find an MO30 car without LSD. Anyone ordering such a car would have really blown it by not choosing this option.

I would be curious if anyone out there has an MO30 without LSD.

You are right. An NNJR PCA instructor friend of mine has an M030 without LSD and I got a ride with him at VIR in November. The handling was much tighter and flatter than my car, but the amount of spinning that the inside rear tire did in corners was unbelievable! My '94 has LSD. Up until that ride, I had no idea how good I had it! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Were the larger 17" wheels just an option by themselves? I've got a 1994 coupe that I recently "inherited" from my living father <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> and he would like me to sell it. I owned a 944 for 12 years and I'm now looking to research all of the options on this car.

Where is this decal that lists options? Under the rear carpet on top of the fuel tank?

Is there a place I can go that lists all of the options for these cars this year? It would really help with selling it if I do...

Thanks

I believe that the 17" wheels were a stand alone option. They were standard as part of the M030 option. The option codes on my car are on a sticker under the rear carpet and there is a duplicate of that sticker pasted in my owner's manual. You can lookup the option codes at this site: http://www.kindel.com/porsche/options.asp

Good luck,

mike

Thanks. I did check the option codes and the wheels were an option. Also one other wierd option was the tires. Some sort of option where you can pick between Michelins, Bridgestones, Continentals and Pirellis.

I also have the "2 door speaker" option but have 3 speakers in each door. Wierd...

Does anyone know what it would cost to upgrade a non factory M030 to factory specs with Limited slip. I'm currently looking for another 968 and didn't want to limit myself to only coupes with the M030 however I'm seriously considering doing a Powerhaus turbo conversion once I find the right 968, which means I'll have to upgrade the tranny, suspension, and brakes, so depending on the cost to upgrade to M030 w/ lim slip I may have to revise my buying strategy.

Speaking of Powerhaus conversions, anybody actually done one? I thought about doing one when I owned my 94 968 about 5 years ago with PH, but I purchased my 993 C4S instead and sold the 968, should have just done the conversion and kept the 968, oh well live and learn. I'm just curious, besides the fact that PH conversions are on the pricy side I'ld like to find out more about the actual process. I emailed them but never heard back.

17" inch wheels were a seperate option. I ordered my 968 with 17s, but opted not to get the sport package. I was still able hit curves on the autobahn in Germany at 160 mph with no problem. Boy, I really had fun driving in Germany and all over Europe. There we surprisingly not that many 968s in 93. Many Germans were not even familiar with the model. I had fun kicking BMWs, Benzs etc butts.

I'm still struggling with finding out about my suspension, as all the documents are in Japanse. My '93 968 certainly has a non-standard suspension, but I'm insecure if its M030 or retrofitted. Now assumming that it's the M030, I wonder if some of you guys have successfully re-adjusted it, and if there is a manual-like instruction available. My car is extremely lowered, and hence, the ride is a tad too firm. Personally, I think a somewhat softer ride would do quite nicely with the GT-like feel the Tiptronic is delivering.

Any help is really appreciated.

Cheers, Thomas

Our rear suspensions are height adjustable, M030 or standard. If you have the front Koni M030 struts, these are also height adjustable. A good alignment shop should be able to dial your ride height up to where you like it. The harsh ride could be due to the springs - you may need to swap these out if they've been upgraded to something heavier. It's also possible your shocks, if they're Koni yellows (M030), are just set too stiff - that's an easy adjustment, so I'd start there. Make sure you know exactly what's on your car now before changing things out though. Good luck!

Thanks, bomfactory, that was very helpful. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> I will check out and feed back once I have returned from a holiday trip.

Thomas...even though the info on your car is in Japanese, the option codes are numeric and should tell you what you have. Have you looked for the code sheet?
