anybody looking for a 968 clear bra?

i am working on a pattern for a clear bra kit for the 968 - i should have it done in about a week - this would be able to be installed by the end user, or you could have a shop do it

i have 2 questions:

1. how many are interested?

2. what is this worth to people?

I thought I always wanted one but now I think I would prefer a removeable bra; just put in on for highway runs. I was not impressed with a 2009 911 that had it as I could tell right away and the edges were very visible - car was charcoal grey. Might be fine on a lighter car but I have Midnight Blue. Also, I would want my paint under the bra to be perfect before application. My paint is probably a 9-9.5 on the front but if I were to afix a bra then it would have to be a 10 and we know what a front end repaint costs. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif[/img]

i get it - i also have a midnight blue car, so i know exactly where you are coming from

i also have a vinyl full bra kit, which i use frequently - there are a few problems with it:

1. at speed, the bra moves - this scuffs the paint, requiring buffing when you take it off

2. you cannot leave it on when it is raining, so during those times, you are unprotected (guess when the most amount of paint damaging crap is flying around?)

3. paint fades due to exposure to sun, and with the vinyl bra, it fades differently than the rest of the car

i mitigated number 1 by applying blue masking tape to the areas that get rubbed - it's a pain, but it works

i resolved number 2 by not driving in the rain - period

clear bra edge lines are ALWAYS going to be visible on any clear bra on any color car - it will vary from car to car, but they will always be there - the reflection of the material, regardless of who makes it, will never be the same as that of paint, whether with clear coat or without, light or dark color

these become even more visible when somebody fails to remove the wax from the edge (very common)

as for waiting for paint to be perfect, good luck - i totally repainted the car - before adding a clear bra, you have to wait 6 to 8 weeks for the paint to cure - you can either not drive it during that time, or you can apply the bra to the brand new chips and dings in the paint - either way, you are not likely to have a lot of luck there

the good news is that this kit should be fairly cheap (i'm guessing well under $300), so it won't be a big deal to get another one when you decide to repaint

i'll have more information in about a week

I have a removable bra that I purchased to use after I had the car repainted a few years ago. However, I haven't been diligent about it, so at this point I don't bother. So - I guess I'll say that the removable bra is for sale - and maybe I'll purchase a clear kit to put away until after the next respray. Thus, interested but not for too much.

I'm interested.

I'm sucking here in the present location (desert southwest) with all the friggin' wind, sand, rocks, roadside debris etc. It's like driving in Iraq!!! You almost need to clear-bra the whole dang car here. The crap blows and/or gets slung from all directions!

I was talking to Bob Blackwell, while admiring his car the other day, about this very thing. He's got a very cool solution on the front of his car though it was a snick more than $300 to install. Personally, I'm more inclined to go clear.

I'd be interested too, except that I got one last summer. A year after I had the front bumper, hood and fenders repainted, I noticed lots of tiny chips on the bumper, and I didn't want the lines across the fenders and hood, so I only got the bumper filmed--it was $500, but I didn't have to apply it. It's been on for 6 months, looks great, and I haven't gotten any chips on the fenders or hood in that time.

yeah - but it's a "spray on and lay down" installation - very DIY - the only reason that having somebody do it is so expensive is the custom cutting and the care needed not to scratch the paint - none of that is involved in a kit

i'm not sure about the numbers - i'm guessing that i could easily do it for that, based on other kits retailing for that, and factoring in knowing that i never mark things up as much as others do, as well as the low quantities

i'll have that meeting this week - i already have the pattern and just need to have it scanned and then made

Checking back in on this. When I inspected my front end for the Dr. C treatment I found a lot of little nicks pretty high up on the hood - likely related to the continual rise profile of the hood. I'd recommend that the pattern include full hood coverage and fender coverage to the apex, if you will, of the horizontal profile.

I'd also like to have a pattern for mirrors and rear fender flares just fore of the rear wheel wells where I have seen a lot of road rash.

Would increase material costs but would be well worth it IMHO.

lol- you can always do the whole car - i saw a carrera gt like that - didn't actually look that bad

i'm not having a lot of luck getting this done - everybody wants to get into my pockets and sell the kits themselves, but not pay me for the work making the pattern happen

We had a 2010 GT3 RS that had the whole car done with 3M film. It looked perfect and cosy about $3K. I guess if you can afford a GT3RS you can pay $3k to have it covered.
