limp mode
#1

took a trip yesterday. and car suddenly lurches a couple of times.. engine warning light and tiptronic light comes on and car decreases in speed. Pulled over to shoulder and turned car off waited few minutes

Turned car back on tip light is on vehicle max speed is 40 miles and I try to not exceed 3500 rpm (Limp Mode)

took it to a mechanic he takes a look at it but as always cannot find the problem

I park and read any post on the forums about limp mode and disconnect battery. tip light no longer is on and limp mode is gone. Car is idling very rough

Drove back home but check engine light and tip light comes back on. Car surges when I am driving back also wining noise in back

taking car to mechanic on Monday hope its not a transmission

Doesn't sound good, please let us know what your mechanic finds is wrong.

A few years ago, with my Mercedes however, the transmission felt as it was " slipping " when going uphill, the rpm also surged at times, and it automatically went into low gear ( same as limp mode ? ) so it would not let you drive over 40 mp , but it did not have the rough idle issue you mentioned. All of those symptoms which to a layman such as myself pointed to a shot transmission were actually caused by a failed thermostat ; the coolant temperature was just off a bit and though it never came even close to overheating it was just enough to throw the computer into safety mode and make the car act in that manner. If the 968 tip computer is set up in a similar manner to the MBZ ( hey, they're German, probably all their engineers think alike..) I would not completely dismiss something as simple as that which ostensibly might seem unrelated .. Do let us know the outcome, I presume those of us with a tip car ( also..) could experience the same issue sooner or later ..

there are so many things that can cause this kind of thing. the ECU does a lot to protect the transmission. if it senses anything out of whack, it goes into limp mode. the first thing to do is scan the codes.

no codes.... I am thinking ecu... at first I thought it was speed sensor which reacts same way

on my drive home I went into crying mode....lol

when you disconnected the battery, you cleared the codes. if the problem persists, it should throw a code. do a blink test, or better yet, get it to somebody with a durametric or bosch hammer.

I know the durametric will not read codes out of the tip module. I have a Baum tools scan tool that reads the fault codes out of the tip beautifully. That is why I opted for it instead of anything else. If you have no other option, I'd be willing to work out a loaner arrangement. It can also do actual values so I might greatly reduce diagnostic times. One of the most common causes of limp mode and a tiptronic light is fluid level. I find they are very finicky when it comes to proper fluid level.

So durametrics are only useful to manual transmission cars ?? That seems odd.

No, that is not what I said. Durametric will read codes from the engine, srs and airbag. They will not talk to,the tip module. The Baum will talk to all 4 modules. So a durametric will work on a manual and a tip perfectly fine, but it will not read codes specific to a tip brain which is a separate module.

sometimes when I go through gears I hear a clunk noise

clunking is prime symptom of the flex damper failing.

The damperplate wouldn't trigger the light as well. In the first few years there has been some modifications about the harnas. Perhaps there is something wrongin the wiring that triggers the light. Or a fault dme will do it is well i found out in the past.

My "check engine" light ( not the "!" light ) still appears every other week or so, stays on for maybe half a minute and then disappears again...until the next time. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/glare.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> The pedal test shows no fault codes, and neither does the Porsche computer my mechanic uses. So, maybe a wiring issue / gremlin that developed , or what else can it be ?

Of all the things that could trigger limp mode, if it does in fact turn out to be the alternator then I'd say that is very fortunate. Easy enough to replace even for a DIY job and less than $200 to have it rebuilt to better than factory spec. I'd say you were fortunate it wasn't anything related to the gearbox itself.
