Used or New Wheels - any suggestion for some lightweight wheels? Need to be 17 x 8.5 per the rules

Thanks

You can get Boxter twists in 17x8.5 et 50. You may have to buy 2 sets to acheive this.

Good suggestion - I've been thinking about that but they may be a little heavy - want to reduce rotating mass and unsprung weight.

Problem is the true racing wheels that fit Porsche seem to be rare and very very expensive.

When I was hunting my speedlines, there was few deals also for Magnesium BBS Motorsport wheels... the problem was, and often is, that I wouldn't dare to purchase used wheels via internet, if I didn't know the seller beforehand.
But, I estimate the prices for light used wheels to be 2000 - 3000eur. BBS Motorsport wheels would be good in that sense that they're often 3 piece wheels, which are easier to repare, if you crash into something. my 1 piece magnesium wheels cannot be repaired.

Good source could be rennlists Racing folk, I'm sure there's bunch of people racing with their gt3's who get new wheels every year.

Pete let me hold one of the 10"? rear's....pretty damn light for an 18" wheel.

If you want an OEM wheel, my 18" Hollow Spokes are pretty light for what they are.....i think they are lighter then the OEM 17" 968 wheels (i'd have to double check my weight charts when i get home).

Unfortunately I'm restricted to 17 inch wheels. Worse is the must be 8.5 inches wide - the cup wheels on my car are too wide in the back at 9 inches

You're problem is going to be finding an 8.5 in the correct offset for the rear. Your best bet is getting some custom wheels made, CCW, Fikse, etc. Not the cheap solution but the best one.

When I ran USTCC a few years ago the max rim width was 8.0. I found some 17x8 cup rims and ran fronts on the rear with big spacers. Not the best, but I wasn't going to buy exspensive wheels for only a couple races. It worked good.

Boxter Cup 3s are about 20 lb/wheel. Pretty OK.

I'll look for those Boxster cup 3s - are they the twists? I'll google 'em

Eric - you da man - been looking at your site a bunch - was curious if your cage is a safety devices setup - that's what I'm putting in my car plus nascar bars both doors and a dash bar.

Thanks gents - looking forward to posting some race video this spring

No, its a custom cage. I'd recommend it over modifying something off the shelf. My car originally had a cage based on an autopower rollbar but that was cut out after I bought it.

Your cage looks very similar to the cage I'm getting from safety devices-it will be welded in. I've done Autopower cages before and wouldn't recommend them. This Safety Devices cage will be the first weld in factory cage I've had installed in a car.

Typically I like the full custom cages but this one looks pretty solid - hopefully I won't be disappointed. The dash bar and Nascar door bars with finish it up nice. I may have them extend the rear tubes out to the frame towards the back of the hatch.

yikes the misnomering gets worse - there is no such thing as a Cup 3 - go to the wheel enhancement site and you can see all of the porsche wheels, using their correct names - they get the names directly from porsche

but the front hollow spoke version is probably about 20lbs - the rear is probably about 23

Thanks for that lead - some good wheels there but I'm going to continue looking. It's a tough size - 17 x 8 1/2

your best bet is probably to enlist the services of patrick (porschedude) - he seems to find all the screaming deals on wheels - i can only surmise that he spends a fair amount of time browsing, and probably knows every wheel for sale

+1 Without a question for racing. Custom; nice and tight against the body, with the right size ad thickness bars in different sections to maximize stiffness, save weight, and maximize compliance with different sanctioning bodies. Also with custom cut and welded, correctly placed and plated, anchor points. Not to mention having the ability to customize to your liking things such as intrusion bars, door bars, dash bar, and so forth....

Being one of the single shot bigger and most important investment in the rae car (not to mention the reversing difficulty), and the actual relatively small difference in total cost once it is all said and done, you will be better off with a nicely built custom cage. Just my 2 cents....
