993 Cup (Cup 2) wheels

Hi



Looking for the optional 17 inch wheel set for the 968....



7.5x17", 65mm offset for the front

9x17", 55mm offset for the rear



Anybody can help me out on this that would be great whether you have them for sale or you may know someone who might.

Would there be any difference in ride with the 7 vs 7.5? How about tire sizes?

Does handling change at all?



Does it make a difference that the factory option was the 7.5 built specifically for the 968?

Tire size is exactly the same...handling is still better with 17's than 16's and aesthetically better too.



If you were concerned about concourse, the correct wheel choice would be 7.5", they are just a lot harder to find.

Note: every rim size is compatible with different tyre sizes. Example: a 7j rim will accept tyres anywhere between 195 (min) and 225 (max) mm. Optimal/recommended size would be 205 or 215 mm. An 8.5J will even accept a 225 mm tyre (as a minimum).



Point is, there is always some room to play with tyre size vs rim size. For a nimbler steering feel, a narrow tyre on a wide rim would be better than a wide tyre on a narrow rim.

in your experience if I get 7j and 9j what would you recommend in tire size if I wanted nimbler handling. And maybe tire sizes that represents a more heavier handling?



I would like to have a more stable ride at higher speeds which is one of the reasons I am upgrading. I would hope that this upgrade wil help with the wandering i get.

going to a wider tire will not help cure wander. that is far more likely to be a suspension bushing or alignment issue. wider tires will actually INCREASE the tendency to wander.

on a 9" rim, you want a 255/40.



on a 7" rim, the 205 is fine. i'd have to check the profile to find out what comes out to 25" outside diameter.



on a 7.5" (which is what our cars came with) you want a 225/45

If you opt for the 205, the profile would be 50, so 205/50 R17 (diameter: 25,07")

I run 8J with a 225/40 R17 and 9J with a 255/40 R17.



The rear tyres aren't available in too many brands though, usually they come in 18".

OT but the field via which I would send a PM to a member somehow does not open sufficiently on the iPad to allow that, so Jay : yeah, just as nibn968 posted, your car looks great, so what the heck is it doing parked inches away from a fence which looks like it's moments from coming down crashing on your car ??!

lol - I was wondering the same thing - kind of an odd-looking area for a beautiful 968 to be hanging out in general (note the "classic" in the background).



As far as the wheels, I'm still somewhat interested in converting from my staggered 18" set-up to a square, 17 x 9" set-up, as it would save a lot of money on replacement tires in the long run, given the track-oriented nature of my car. With Porsche's oddball 5 x 130 mm bolt pattern, 993 Cup (Cup 2)'s are about the only game in town without going the uber-expensive custom wheel route. But since no Porsches that ever wore these wheels came in a square set-up, nobody ever has a set of four 17 x 993 Cup (Cup 2)'s for sale. I've never even seen anyone selling just two 17 x 9's. So, if I wanted to make the switch, I'd have to buy two sets of four, most likely 17 x 7's and 17 x 9's, and sell the four extra 17 x 7's, which no one person would likely be in the market for. So there's a bunch of hassle and expense associated with the extra shipping, all the extra buying and selling, storage, etc. It's looking more and more like I'm going to stay with my current set-up, but drop down a little in tire size, as what I have now is a little too wide for my current wheels (285/35 -18's on 10" wide wheels in back, and 255/35-18's on 8.5" wide wheels in front). I've just rotated my current tires side-to-side, so they still have some thread left, since I haven't been to the track in a little while, so I'm not going to make any changes right away, but any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Unfortunately, while the wheels available for our cars aren't the heaviest in the known universe, they're far from the lightest wheels money can buy, either, which further complicates my particular decision. I know, I know, it's perimeter weight that really counts, meaning dropping from 18" to 17" has an automatic advantage. But still...

Those look nice (they're definitely in good condition, anyway), but I have several questions. First, the offset, which is what I assume ET stands for, is very different (smaller) from typical Porsche wheels. Would this necessitate the use of spacers? Also, I'm not seeing these wheels in the Porsche wheel weight chart I posted. Any idea what they weigh? I researched Cup 3 Turbo Twist wheels online, and found that the factory original versions had hollow spokes, making them significantly lighter than the aftermarket copy-cats, which have solid spokes. From the description I read, the ones in the ad appear to be aftermarkets. Thanks.
