Lift Bars
#1

This looks like it might be an inexpensive solution (not to mention easy to store compared to a lift) for the 928. Has anyone seen these for the 968 (944)?

Interesting. Certainly not equivalent to a lift, but a lot better than the current "solution" (whatever that is). Someone should start producing these. Have you tried contacting the 928 supplier and asking if they'd make the same product to fit a 968?

Seems like Habor Frieght has an adjustable lift bar that might work. It is made to fit the head of a floor jack. Cheap too as I recall. Could be the ticket, but I will have to find it again.

I didn't want to appear too presumptuous so I didn't put anything in my post, but I was pretty sure this thread would get Flash's creative juices flowing. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Take a look and see if this wouldn't work.

Right idea - but I seriously doubt that I could get that under the car, and get the jack under that, unless the car was already raised several inches. I'd also want the end pieces to have the right shape to fit into the lift points on the car, and not simply have the lift points resting on rubber pads. There may also be additional technical issues, but those are the ones that struck me quickly.

If they could be made from square stock with pins on each end, they might work with a low jack like the sears aluminum that some of us have.

My 968 sits 5.25" from floor to surface of the liftting plate.

The jack min. is 3.75".

That leaves 1.50" for the lift bar.

Steel Square tube is available in 1.50"; gauge 1/4; wall 0.250; material spec ASTM A 513.

For more clearance...

Steel Square tube 1.25"; gauge 11; wall 0.120; material spec ASTM A 513.

or...

Steel Square tube 1"; gauge 11; wall 0.120; material spec ASTM A 513.

Will this smaller size be strong enough, as it rests on the body( pretty much) and will not have to deal with an undistributed load?

This seems like a very simple item to build. Maybe the guys the flash has met fabricating the chassis brace could bang these out and powder coat them,in no time.

My manual shows the distance, centerline, between the 2 lift points as 1164mm +/- 3.5mm (45.8267717 inches +/_ 0.137795276 inches)

The hole measure 1.0", so a pin with a chamfered top that is 15/16" diam. should fit fine.

Sounds like a very cool item to have!

Cant remove the wheels but may be OK for tinkering under the car. Is that angle bad for oil changes or will it actually assist?

"can't remove the wheels" because the link that rhudeboye posted is to ramps, not the bars that are being discussed.

Drive the back end up the ramp.
