Bars and listers
#1

After finally finding some time Saturday to put in the MO3O swaybars, I was merrily trying to get bushing to go where they did not like to, when a 968 pulls up in front of my driveway . Out steps Harvey, another Forum lister, and we are equally surprised to find another 968 in our relatively small, remote city. We, of course, talked 968 for a while, I couldn't help but like his car and the way the aftermarket exhaust sounds. It is really reassuring to know there is another person close that knows about these cars. Thanks Harvey. About a half hour later Harvey returned while he was out excersizing his 928 - a real front engine Porsche guy and another great looking and sounding car!

After I finished with getting the bars in and new brakes on the front, my test drive was a reward. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. The car corners much better and is planted as it should. I did have a question: What hole setting do you put the back bar in? I put it in the center and I'm looking for neutral handling. The rest of the suspension is up to snuff, but basically stock with new Bilstein sport shocks.

Cheers,

Stephen

Sguy,

I'm still drooling over your beautiful car. I thought my black beauty was near perfect until I saw yours. Your Guards Red doesn't look like it's ever seen rain. And the paint is the best I've seen. Plus the AutoX goodies that are part of the car. No wonder you were giving the 928 guys a run for their money at the Spokane Track Attack! I checked with some of those guys and all were quiet except the guy in the Lotus Elite, who claims no one can pass him.

Great car. Best 968 I've seen. There aren't a lot around in that kind of shape.

With directions, I didn't find the T-belt difficult to change out, nor the water pump, rollers, etc. Just takes time. When I first got my 968, I spent several months going over it front to back looking and replacing critical parts that might go out on a long trip...keeping the old ones for spares. I have total confidence in the 968 to get me anywhere and back. I wish I could say that about the 928 although it's in immaculate shape too. The 8-foot long 928 Tbelt is a design concern. However, once you drive a 928 (hard and fast) the cushy seats and V-8 torque are totally addictive. It's absolutely a luxury grand touring car and no slouch anywhere else. I'm sure long distance cruise control at 140mph would not be a problem. On the straight at the Spokane Raceway, the fastest I could get it going was 147mph...then it was time to shift into 5th gear...and that was the cruising gear and it really started crawling. Getting 155 or so out of these cars should not be a problem. I've not had the 968 on the track but listening to you it sounds like a real blast!

Good luck on your great acquisition!

population of Moscow,Idaho?

Edit never mind -- a little less than 22,000

Pretty high odds against there being 2 968 owners in town I'd say.

Probably the only 2 in Idaho.

Harvey,

Thanks for the kind words on my car. I've had other complements too. It is very well maintained and I've had no issues with it. The PO just changed the belts, etc. and went through everything. I've just been upgrading the car and enjoying it. I have full confidence in my car too. The Elise was getting passed by some of the fastest cars - some modified STI, M3, Z06 - especially on the straight.

Mark,

The improbable part was Harvey driving by when I was working on my car! There is at least one other in Idaho I know of right now. If you look in the for sale section, there is a black/black MO3O in Boise for sale - Drool.

Anyone have any comments on setting the back bars?

Cheers,

Stephen

Yea, I couldn't believe my eyes. Very well could be the only two 968s in the state. Lots of 4WDs though.

Well, if the MO3O sells out of state, we may yet be the only ones, although Boise does have a few hundred or so more people down there.

BTW, only 6 hours further is the new Miller Race Track that recently opened up in Salt Lake City. Supposed to be one heck of an impressive track.

Harvey,

It sounds like your up for a western regional track event with 968's - Maybe at the Miller track near SLC?. Sounds good to me. When next year's calendar comes out for that track, let's take a look. Maybe we could get people together from a large area that includes a one day drive to the track.

There is also a BMW driving school this month at Spokane Raceway Park Oct. 28 and 29 and I'll be there testing new bars and tires, and hopefully going faster still . Last word is they still have openings and it is a great school. That will be my last event for the year

here's a 928 Porsche club in SLC that I'm sure will be involved in track events. Maybe we could piggyback on one of their events. I'll keep my eyes open. Only problem with 928 guys is when you pass them.

Stephen, I put my rear M030 sway bar in the first position. This is the firm position due to the shorter lever arm. I have been very happy with it on both strteet and track. The understeer is gone. good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I second that, although in the right circumstances I get some snap oversteer now. I am at the tightest setting. I think the oversteer might be because of other reasons though...I am fairly confident I am coil binding the rear right now, as hard as that is for me to believe. It goes from perfect, then a little faster, and it feels like the springs go infinite. Ordered 450/600, so we will see how that goesSmile.

Bob and Wes,

Thanks for the input on the bar setting. I have it in the middle hole now and will try it on the track that way. If it won't balance and understeers, I'll set it to the harder setting and hopefully feel the difference. I like some oversteer - at the right time and being able to control it, not the snap kind.

Cheers,

Stephen

hey guys keep us updated, this is a really interesting thread.

Flash - where are you at with springs? 450/600 sounds like where you were at recently, yes?

Wes - is your car street + track or mostly track?

Sguy - PICS, DAMMIT!

just ordered the 400/600 setup - will be installing next wednesday - that is as much as the shocks and struts can handle, so this is the last round

You guys may be it in Idaho as I recently took the Blk/Blk M030 car to Dover, DE... The pass from Idaho Falls to Jackson, WY is breathtaking.

I use the swaybar on full stiff as well. If I were running a lot of high speed stuff on the race track I would likely go to the mid setting initially. The car is very neutral with the M030 bars.

Congratulations on the great M030 you just bought! Shame to see it leave Idaho but sounds like it's gone to a good home. It's funny how these cars change coasts. I bought mine in Atlanta. Sguy got his somewhere in the northeast if I remember right. Great driving cars. Not as tiring as a Camry.

Idaho and the Rockies do have some great roads for sports cars.

Good luck!

Thanks, Harvey.

It's a great car, and runs much better now that I've redone the belts. There are so few of the M030 cars with LSD, you kind of have to take what you can get...no matter where it is. Besides these cars eat mileage when traveling across the country.

I'm in search of a set of original rear shocks to complete the package. Somebody took the helper springs off of the car at some point.
