LED 3rd brakelight upgrade
#81
After changing the bulbs in my old S2 Cab rear lamp I hit on the idea of soldering 3-4 LEDs together and installing them in place of the center bulbs in such a way as to be able to press the group of LEDs into the bipin bulb socket.
Joel, I have to replace the bulbs on my US spec S2 cab but can't figure out how to pull the assembly off. Did you have to tear out the trunk lid liner to access the 3rd brake light assembly? Don't really want to have to replace that. Thanks.

If you look carefully at the trunk lid "beam" close to the hinge side, running from left to right, you'll note there are two notches. These line up with the retaining bolts. Push the foam lid liner out of the way to gain access.

Great job, Silvy - this has been interesting to follow. The clear lens looks great on your car.
Thanks! Poured another yesterday.

Thanks. How do I push the foam liner out of the way? It appears to be attached in there pretty good. Isn't it glued in?

It is glued in, but you should be able to push it aside sufficiently to get a socket on the head of the bolt - that's all the clearance you need to create. The foam should move that little bit (IIRC, I did it first with the socket drive, then with the socket), and then spring back into place so that there's almost no evidence of the "tampering" after you're done.

It is glued in the center area only. It pulls out from the "frame" and goes back in VERY easily.

Silv,

You offering these to interested buyers? I need to change all but one bulb and I really like the clear lens. Would look much better on the black cab IMHO.

Thanks

I have the mold and some resin left. I could pour you a lens for $40 plus freight.
It could ship USPS medium package flat rate for less than $13 in the cont. USA.
I did the clear LED mod and I highly recommend it. The LEDs are only red when turned on.

Send me a PM if you are interested.
Thanks
