I do not have a vacuum chamber, so I'll try the "bombs away" method.

The guys at TAP tell me that if I pour at the edge of the mold that I should not get any bubbles.

be sure you're using a clear casting resin and not just any old polyester resin





also, the act of simply mixing the resin and the catalyst together will cause bubbles... in school when we were doing any sort of casting, all of the resin was degassed before it ever touched the mold.



If you have an air compressor, you can pressure cast the parts to deal with the bubbles as well.

I did a quick search of the 'net to see if there were any Corvette owners out there that have tackled the 3rd brake light LED conversion. I'm guessing that the 968 3rd brake light originating with the Corvette is an urban legend. It appears that Chevrolet has had the 3rd brake light integrated with the bumper since the Vette returned in 1986 (via ASC). I noticed on the ASC web page that ASC also did the Buick Reatta in 1990. The Reatta 3rd light looks familiar. Does anyone have additional information? If the 968 light comes from the Reatta, there is less chance that there are custom LED conversions out there.

The mod is one of the easiest electrical mods on the 968. All you need are simple tools that you can borrow or get from Radio Shack.



The part to pay attention to is that you are soldering in the LEDs in the correct direction. They have an "in" and an "out", if you will, and will not light up if soldered in the wrong way. I had a spare 12volt battery in the garage, so I tested the led placement before I installed it into the lens. Saved time as I screwed up 2 of the LEDs.



You can unsolder the wrong ones and turn them around and solder them right back in. Putting them in backwards does not damage them. If you look into the clear plastic body of the LED you will see that there is a difference in the shape of the metal pieces inside; figure out one and copy.



Even if you have never soldered, this project is very easy for a first-timer.



It will take you more time to remove and replace the assembly than to drill the holes and solder in the parts. Don't forget the resister. You need to get the exact value and wattage to avoid problems.

I could not find it either. The DOT on the lens says 86. In the old days the year was on the lens, so maybe it was originally made in 1986?



Anyway, I just modified the OEM lens by removing the pins and the tab and added a new slot in front of the old tab to hold the center of the PCB in it's new location.



The mold box is made and Monday will be the day that I'll pu the silicon rtv and cast the mold. I'll get the polyester resin and try the pour next week if the mold comes out OK.

i'll try to dig mine out of the attic - the numbers listed above are the porsche numbers - there are other numbers that are GM numbers, at least in mine - mine even has the logo - i did this already once before, but managed to lose the research notes in one of the moves

Does this mean that you are running without it?



As mine is off now, getting ready to make the mold, I REALLY like the rear cab deck without it. Too bad I didn't think about it when I had the deck lid painted last year!



I'll just pretend that it is a safety issue and forget about how much cleaner it looks without it, rats!

I think 1986 was the first year of the mandate for a high mounted brake light. I've looked at internet pics of the Corvette, Cavalier, Sunbird, and Camaro. No luck.
