Opinions on Cataclean and other fuel additives/cleaners?
#1

Hi all,

New to all of this and just looking for advice and recommendations.  I just took ownership of a 1992 968 cabriolet 6 speed with 119K miles.  A friend who is also a car enthusiast has suggested that I use Cataclean, and also shared some products to use.  I am a novice here, so appreciate any guidance you might provide.  Are they something that you use, and if so, how frequently?  If you don't recommend - I'd love to hear why.  Just looking to learn.  Thanks!!

The other products he's recommended:

Gumout Regane High Mileage Fuel System Cleaner

Super Tech Fuel Treatment

Seafoam Concentrated Fuel Injector Cleaner

Thanks so much!

Frances

To be fair if the car is used regularly with top quality fuel you dont need any of that stuff,

Get the injectors professionally serviced, new fuel filter and that will do

Break the hot wire mass airflow sensor with chemicals will cost you at least $1000 for a new one

My car has done 180,000 miles never put any of that stuff in it as there is no point, burns no oil and runs perfectly

I agree with Waylander. Our 1994 968 has been driving around for about 31 years now and works just fine.

We did send the fuel injectors to Mr. Injector for cleaning last year and only one was slightly down on flow. Pretty reasonable cost too. Here's the contact information:

I never used any oil or fuel additives ( 120,000 miles now )  My mechanic who worked on my 944s and 968s, as well as other German cars for forty + years  asserted those additives are completely useless .   ( Snake oil )

However, I have used Water Wetter in the coolant , and I can vouch to the fact that it does make a significant difference , you can even see it on the gauge , it’ll consistently keep the temps down even in the most challenging heat up conditions .

The only thing my mechanic recommends is some techron once a year.

That's because gas changes. We used to buy mostly Mobil. Especially in the Element.

Well something changed at the station and her car started running like crap. Couldn't figure it out.

Added the techron and it started running a bit better. Swapped out the injectors, switched to a Sunoco station

and haven't looked back. 2007 with 150K on it and it runs like new.

Always get gas at a branded top tier station. No Wawa or raceway..it's all a blend...

I run 91 octane ethonal free in my car. Because it has no additives, I run a bottle of Techron in a tank of fuel once or twice a year. Every couple of years, I run a bottle of BG products 44K fuel injection cleaner.

I know it works because it’s the only thing that will keep the CEL off in my Smart long enough to get it emissions tested. It’s been throwing an “engine rich at idle” code for a couple of years now and I’m too lazy to tear the intake apart and clean the sensor, which is the fix.

It could simply be a “butt dyno Jedi mind trick” but it seems like the 968 has a lot more low end grunt after I run the 44K through it. About the same feeling as running a tank of 94 Octane, when I can get it.

I put a can of seafoam in the oil 100 miles before a change, it hasn't done any damage.

JMHO,
