Darth, I'm a Hoosier too, but I escaped to Arizona. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Hi Tom!

He, He ;>))

I escape to the FL Keys during Winter, but get to come back to Hoosier land just in time for Tornado Season!

Flash... That's $15K Stated Value, and $100K/$300K Liability...

Probably not enough for the "Left Coast"... Can't help you there!

I still have to dodge horses and buggies driven by folks with beards and black hats in Hoosier Land... I won't bother to explain what I have to dodge down here in The Keys!!!

darth - yeah - that's what i found too - no, wasn't enough, and there was no way to patch the gap to the umbrella policy

what is "high" when speaking in liability limits? around here, 250,000 is pretty low, 500,000 is average, 1,000,000 is pretty much needed if you want to keep your house

that was the problem i was finding with the other policies - they only went to 300,000 - that wouldn't cover much here - the umbrella policies didn't kick in until 500,000 - that left me with a very real possibility of being on the hook for 200,000

i figured the added cost of the gap in car value was a lot easier to absorb than the 200 grand from somebody suing me

sure would like to find a "solves all problems" policy though

That is a good point. I don't think my coverage numbers have gone up much in tha past 20 years - but car and home values certainly have - to say nothing of medical costs. Might be a good time to have a chat with USAA...

Flash, umbrella policies used to be dirt cheap for up to $5M but not any longer and it's now hard to get more than about $1M here in AZ. Greedy insurance companies making up for hurricane and tornado losses elsewhere.

Darth, mums the word to the parole board about my escape.

I only have to carry 100/300/50 for my auto limits because I am grandfathered on the umbrella policy. We require new customers to carry 250/300/250 and the umbrella kicks in above this point. I have an umbrella to 2 million above the other limits on my car, home, and business. It starts coverage as soon as the underlining policy max out.

They didn't hear a thing from me! Besides, the cops are all looking for my wife's relatives, so doesn't leave them much time to chase you! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Tell them to look in the Kentucky foothills where my ex wife's relatives reside.

For the three cars - '94 968, '95 MBZ E320, '98 Nissan Pathfinder - my premium with Liberty Mutual is

$1,450/yr. The 968 is $ 600 of that figure. Limits are $ 250/500/100 ( including UIM for the same limit ), deductibles are $ 50 comprehensive, and $ 1,000 collision. ( btw, the premium difference for that ridiculousy low $ 50 comp. deduct as opposed to a $ 500 deduct. was only $ 30/yr. - since my windshield is a magnet for rocks, I know I'll make that money up in no time..) On top of the L.M. policy I have a $2 mil. umbrella with Fireman's Fund ( my homeowners' carrier ) which costs us $450/yr .

But back on topic - the problem is that L.M. will only agree to a stated value policy on the 968 if a professional appraisal report supports the amount. In speaking with a couple of local appraisal cos I discovered that in addition to the $750 - $1,500 they quoted for a report ( 20+ page report, but still seems outrageously high if you ask me.. ) whislt they do take in consideration money spent on mods, the condition of the car, etc., at the end of the day the largest single factor is the comparable market value based on recent private sales figures .

So no consideration for the obstacles you will encounter when seeking a replacement; the rarity of the car, the fact that you might have to pay 50% or 100% above the market value to compel a seller to part with a great condition 968...in a color combination you can live with. Alternatively, you would have to buy whatever is listed at the time and then spend tons of $$$ to repaint, may be replace the interior, and all that's needed to get that replacement 968 to a similarly perfect running condition your ex was in... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Sigh.

I checked with various other insurers as well, and no luck so far; of those who could do stated value all asked for the appraisal.

I can get a classic car dealer to do an appraisal here in Alabama for about $50 to $100. Also, the Black Book, CPI Black Book CPI is a book I've used to establish values for some of my customers cars. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

There was a company mentioned in Pano that will provide DE coverage. Can't remember how long ago, but if you contact PCA they may be able to tell you.

As a Claims Adjuster (property, not auto) myself, I can confidently say your insurance company will most likely cover your car for a loss (accident) at a DE event, and then most likely drop you. There are limitations however, because DE events are "Driver Education" events, and are not a competition, timed, or wheel to wheel racing, most carriers are obligated to cover you. Double check your policy, but I believe that is the rule for most carriers. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
