For the three cars - '94 968, '95 MBZ E320, '98 Nissan Pathfinder - my premium with Liberty Mutual is
$1,450/yr. The 968 is $ 600 of that figure. Limits are $ 250/500/100 ( including UIM for the same limit ), deductibles are $ 50 comprehensive, and $ 1,000 collision. ( btw, the premium difference for that ridiculousy low $ 50 comp. deduct as opposed to a $ 500 deduct. was only $ 30/yr. - since my windshield is a magnet for rocks, I know I'll make that money up in no time..) On top of the L.M. policy I have a $2 mil. umbrella with Fireman's Fund ( my homeowners' carrier ) which costs us $450/yr .
But back on topic - the problem is that L.M. will only agree to a stated value policy on the 968 if a professional appraisal report supports the amount. In speaking with a couple of local appraisal cos I discovered that in addition to the $750 - $1,500 they quoted for a report ( 20+ page report, but still seems outrageously high if you ask me.. ) whislt they do take in consideration money spent on mods, the condition of the car, etc., at the end of the day the largest single factor is the comparable market value based on recent private sales figures .
So no consideration for the obstacles you will encounter when seeking a replacement; the rarity of the car, the fact that you might have to pay 50% or 100% above the market value to compel a seller to part with a great condition 968...in a color combination you can live with. Alternatively, you would have to buy whatever is listed at the time and then spend tons of $$$ to repaint, may be replace the interior, and all that's needed to get that replacement 968 to a similarly perfect running condition your ex was in... Sigh.
I checked with various other insurers as well, and no luck so far; of those who could do stated value all asked for the appraisal.
