junk in the trunk

It's amazing to see how much stuff you can fit into the spare tire compartment and cubby spaces. So, I removed the spare tire a number of years ago, primarily to save weight [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif[/img] . However, I always carry a lot of junk in those spaces, some which I think may come in handy some day, some which I think is necessary ( but it really isn't.. ) and having taken it all out this morning to check for a rattle that's driving me nuts and trying to eliminate anything bouncing around in the trunk from the possible causes I thought I'd weigh all of the crap and see just how much I really saved by removing the spare.

Weight of crap : 45 lbs.

Weight of spare wheel/tire - no clue. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif[/img]

In any event, time to thin out some of that stuff I never used and probably never will.

Remove it all, replace with .1 oz. AAA card.

No making fun of us people who carry a spare water pump. At least I took out the spare radiator and fly wheel/clutch. I do need to get the damn shocks out of the trunk.

just for giggles the other day i pulled everything out - clearly i had not been in there in a while - found out i had:

2 pairs of gloves (still only 1 pair of hands, and still have a pair up front)
a scarf (does anybody really wear those anymore? in southern california?)
a cheap film camera (in case of accidents - got the phone now)
a bag for the bags (windscreen, boot cover, tonneau cover, bra)
stereo tools
extra faceplate box for a stereo no longer in the car

i am still dragging around about 10lbs of stuff (jumper cables, tire gauge, bags, first aid kit, yada yada)

but the 2 or 3 lbs of that other stuff got to come out - gained some room in the spare tire well

Along with the AAA card I carry a can of fix a flat.
Saved my butt last summer, and the PM that fixed the tire did not complain at all.

No spare in my trunk either. Even though my car is rarely taken on long trips every now and then I think about getting one but thats waaaaay down on my to do list. That space in my cab is actually empty.

Ad for you cab owners, there's that 80 lbs. cylinder in the rear right wheel well. Ugh! What a bitch to get out! My spare tire compartment is also empty and have a can of fix-a-flat in the cubbie behind me. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img] I know where I can lose another 10 lbs, but that involves running a bunch, and I'm just not sure it's worth the effort.... LOL

sort of - i have worked one out - i have had the prototype for the cab unit in my car for about 3 years now - works great - after removing about 100lbs from the back of the car, this helped balance it back out

i have not yet made the prototype for the hardtops, but i have the drawings

rs barn or higher connections or both will likely be carrying them - we are talking about it - it will probably be part of a battery relocation kit - i'll be discussing this project again this week

Other than 50/50 distribution, what's the thought process behind moving the battery?

the idea was balance - i had removed so much weight from the tail of the car that i had upset the balance - additionally, the front of the car has always felt heavy to me - this addressed both

however, the hidden added bonus was that i also improved the charging system, partially by eliminating the cheap lead connectors and cheap cables that porsche used

My 951S had the baterry in either the left or right rear cuby. Is it not possible to modify/use a 951S wiring harness etc?

british cabrios had it in the left rear as well

porsche uses very inexpensive wire and connectors - this is one of the problems

i used a 4200 strand 0 guage cable and gold connectors - this actually added 0.5v at the battery, even though it was now 10 feet farther away

also, i wanted the battery on the right side of the car, as i sit on the left, so any OEM harnesses would then have needed at least modification anyway - the corner balance is much better where it is now

lol - no, i won't be posting pics or listing specifics at this time - when the decision on the kit is done, then all will be presented
