Jaguar F type
#1

WOW !! That's one purrrdee lookin' vehicle ! In both coupe and roadster versions. I always liked the XKR tne best and I probably still prefer that one ( in every respect ) over the new F type, but this is a close second in my book. Better looking than the 968 ( gasp, did I just say that ?! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ninja.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

Without seeing it in the flesh, it just looks like any other coupe/cab. Compare it to a Ferrari or Lamborghini of even 10 years ago, their design language has evolved, but this seems a little too retro and XKR "lite".

Even the Boxster and 911, even though similar look different.

This still looks a little to "Ian Callum" like the Aston Martin.

Still, I could be proven wrong in the flesh.

The rear looks too BMW Z8 for me.

Probably two of the top reasons I like it .. And it would be interesting to see it in person , some cars photograph really well, and disappoint in person, and vice-versa. Hmm, just like some people :-) .

DS,

The D type and the subsequent E type were pioneering cars, and the E type could trace its styling back to that of the D type. That Jaguar has had to "steal" design elements from other brands cars seems just wrong - particularly, for a new "halo" car. We used to deride the Japanese for their "me too" styling and copying of good cars in the 1980's. this to me seems similar and therefore a bit clumsy and derived.

Look at a Ferrari, it looks like a Ferrari. Park one painted in red and see if anyone does not know what it is. Park a Porsche 911 and see if people don't know what it is. Same for a Lamborghini and Aston Martin. These cars have a clear design language that defines them. I know that Jaguar does not have this history as a continuous lineage, but to play it so safe in a "me too" design seems disappointing.

There cannot be just elements of a car that are great, the whole thing must come together. I agree that there are some good elements, but as a whole - it is just not cohesive (in the pictures anyway).

Lots of press praise, but is this just because it is new? In 2 years time, when the novelty has worn off, will it still have the depth of skills and character to be a winner?

Once again, it seems a little Z4, SLK - nice cars, but not complete as a whole.

I am referring only to the car's lines appeal, not the purity of the design. To me that element is of little importance, and although I do agree that it's disappointing some designers rely on borrowing this or that from other models, if its beautiful and it works, why bother to reinvent the wheel ? What good comes of the purity and uniqueness of the 911 , when IMO it's a butt-ugly design ? I did not think it could get any uglier and then Porsche proved me wrong by coming up with the Cayman. And the very same for Lamborghini. Yes you see one and know immediately it's a Lamborghini. So ? Just like the 911, another butt ugly design. The Miura was the last of that breed that pleased the eye. Realizing this is all subjective of course, I'm sure someone must think the 911 or the Lambos are nothing short of art on wheels..which is how I feel about 90% of all Ferraris and Aston Martins, so we definitely agree there :-) .
