Ds very few people pronounce it correctly! Sort of like the misuse of hoi pol loi ! How do you remember Middle School?

with great difficulty. and it's only because my hands still hurt from using a chisel to inscript words into those heavy stone tablets

funny thing about English ; although in many languages various combinations of letters are pronounced in many different ways, English is the only language of which I can think ( granted, I am familiar with only four other languages ) where a single letter can drastically change the pronounciation and the meaning of one word ; what comes to mind is : laughter and then Slaughter . And with two letters you can change an entire State : Kansas and Arkansas. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/glare.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I can't stand "I went" used instead of "I said".

And in today's Sports section there's a story about how Larry Sanders, (the Milwaukee Bucks center, not Gary Shandling), had "Recieve" tattooed on his hand.

But English is a strange language. How can it be that "flammable" and "inflammable" mean the same thing?

we have a lot of words that are contradictory. like why is it called a "parkway" when we drive on it, and why is it called a "driveway" when we park on it? why is the secretary of the interior in charge of stuff outdoors? why is the secretary of state responsible only for things outside the country?

too funny.

i know i am guilty of not capitalizing, but that's due to the plastic tendons in my right hand. i can't reach over easily to the shift key. really cramps me up. not using an apostrophe where needed, or inserting a comma to create a necessary pause, just makes me nuts when i read things. it changes the entire perception of what is written. run-on sentences often require reading twice. missing an apostrophe in a contraction changes everything. i'd rather that somebody typed "you are" rather than "your", when they intended to type "you're".

lol - maybe i should just start hitting the "ignore" button when i bump into people who don't write well. at a bare minimum, that should free up a lot of my time.

i blame this all on the internet. this "newspeak" that is starting to take over everything makes me want to turn the danged thing off altogether.

must be my hoi pol loi education! I admit I seem to be blind to that one even after you mentioned it. could it be memory problems? although not that common there are certain things I blank on. I can remember faces and breasts but not names. This as one might imagine has caused me untold problems over the years!

Pennsylvania has a Melange of creative ways to pluralize the word "You", which of course is "You"; however, in various parts of the state one can hear:

Youse

You'uns

Yuz

You guys

Youse guys

You both

You and you

All o'yuz:

and even the occasional y'all

I try for You most of the time, but admit that "You all" occasionally creeps in to my usage.

The phonetics in this country is ridiculous. Just listen to local news, in any market. I travel heavily, and it is amazing what is accepted as ok langauge. Yeah, uh-huh, wha, aint, his-self(my favorite) I seen, goes on and on.

But then again......we are just pop culture.

Check back on this one. It's uncanny how many presidents have had difficulty with this word. You'd think that their handlers would work with them on this - given that they have the little red button and all. Carter - Clinton - Bush in my memory.

Try hanging out with some teens or twenty-somethings:

"I went 'gee, let's do something today', and then he went 'what do you want to do?' and then I went 'how about going to the beach', and then he went 'O.K.'"

As for parkway/driveway, etc., wasn't George Carlin wonderful!
