Is there such a thing as "Chinese OEM"?
#1

While removing the front pieces to get at the engine, I noticed my oil cooler duct is cracked, so I looked up a new one. From Pelican and AutoAtlanta and Vertex they're all about $15, with a 4-day lead time for this "Genuine Porsche part".

I called dcAutomative, the dismantlers, and their price is $18. I asked if it was used and he must have been having a bad day because he went off that of course it was used and they don't compete with craigslist, eBay or Chinese parts distributors.

I mentioned the part was listed as OEM on a couple of sites and was cheaper, and he went downhill from there and said sites like Pelican and AutoAtlanta sell "Chinese OEM" parts. Somewhere after ten seconds of diatribe I told him I didn't really want to argue with him about it, but he probably didn't hear me because I'd already hung up the phone.

sure

Oriental Equipment Manufacturer

seriously though, OEM is supposed to be from the original manufacturer, but often merely means that it is approved for use by the car manufacturer, or meets the specifications for use in that model. it does not mean it is the same part as original, nor does it mean that it is the selected vendor for the parts sold by the manufacturer. this one is a continual point of confusion for many people. it is a loophole that has not been closed that allows vendors to put that label on their products.

So this page at Pelican Parts, which says specifically "Genuine PORSCHE" as the brand, could be Chinese?

http://www.pelicanpa...ER%20AIR%20DUCT

Their explanation of that moniker is:

Genuine PORSCHE parts are the same parts that are sold through the PORSCHE dealer network worldwide. The quality of these parts is unparalleled, and directly mirrors the outstanding workmanship that went into the assembly and production of your own classic Porsche.

Genuine PORSCHE parts are packaged in boxes and bags clearly labeled with the PORSCHE logo, production date, and part number. At Pelican, we source our Genuine PORSCHE parts directly from the PORSCHE dealer network, so you can rest assured that when you order Genuine PORSCHE parts, there is no danger of receiving counterfeit items.

Ordering Genuine PORSCHE parts is the best bet for assuring that the parts fit your car exactly as well as they did when it was brand new. Whether you have a 959 or a 914, Genuine PORSCHE parts are the best bet for highest quality and best fit. However, it should be noted that PORSCHE has over the years occasionally changed the construction of some parts and has superseded others, so ordering a Genuine PORSCHE part is not an absolute guarantee that the part will be exactly like the original. Here is some additional information from the Porsche.com site:

Every part within every assembly is key to the originality of the car. To maintain that integrity, we place particular importance on the quality of new spare parts. Wherever possible, these are obtained from the original manufacturers. If that’s no longer feasible, we find alternative sources that manufacture parts which are as close as possible to the original specifications in terms of design, performance and safety. Our current parts catalogue has approximately 29,000 items.
