Is the fun in the genes??? Videos of what was my kid's dream
#1

Aha, I just discovered this section of the forum and thought I could post something non-Porsche, about kids, having fun and about... well... cars ;-)

Some 3 years back, when my son son Marc was only 5 years old I thought it would be time for him to have his own ride. As everybody else in this situation I thought about a V8 or so, but to keep a peaceful neighbourhood I then decided to go electric.

I bought an ordinary pedal-gokart and modified it heavily... like everything else I drive :-)

First I reinforced the chassis and the front axle, crafted an additional rear frame to build a home for the 20mm ball beared axle and an electric motor. As Marc was only 5 I thought I should stay prudent and choose one with only 750Watt / 1 hp ;-)

As I planed to go jogging while the kid drives and as I wanted the kart to climb every hill, I geared it to only a good 20km/h. The power for the fun would then come out of a 16Ah LiPo-akku and controlled by an ecu.

To be fast - all of you know - you need good brakes! I installed a disc brake at the rear axle, 140mm in diameter and good to hold a grown-up on a mountain-bike downhill.

Sure I ripped out the stock plastic wheels and installed larger ones, real ones :-)

So you see, I actually only did, what we all do to our cars ;-)

Here I have a clip of the first test-drive. Marc was 5 at the time and - good luck - very reasonable. The quality is a bit poor and the comments in Swiss-german... good luck in understanding them ;-)

Having read the above, I am sure you get it:

Very soon I realized I have a problem!

Whenever Prinz Marc has something, Prinzess Stefanie - 3 years old back then - wants it too... or something even better!

So I crafted and welded a little wagen in a suitable pink that could be hooked up to the kart for the kids can both drive while their father tries to keep up with them.

Unfortunatelly I do not have a clip from back then, but here is a new one, taken just some days ago:

Ok, you see it is still running strong :-)

Have a great day, Kunz

Wow, that's fantastic ! You built a mini-Tesla roadster . Thanks for sharing the videos - what a great story and fun experience for the kids. Wish I had something like that when I was that age. ( waiting for RAP to say that I could have had a Ford Model T or some similar wiseass remark, lol )

Me too. Is it too late to adopt ? I had a pedal car also, but it was no way near as nice as Jay's.

THAT is not my actual pedal car...I was the third brother so by the time I "inherited" it the thing was pretty rusty and well worn.

I still remember sitting in this rusty metal box with an exposed chain and no real brakes...downhill was a real "thrill".

Ds now come on. That's so unfair. Model T. You would have deserved better than that. This vehicle needs more hp and a roll cage. I'm hoping Dad continues the upgrades as his son ages. But boy something like that would have been cool as a kid indeed!

140mm brakes? That's bigger than you would find on most Fiats! Nicely done!
