Yesterday (e.g., Saturday), as beach goers were trotting by heading for the sand, surf and day at the beach, quite a few glanced, leered and stopped in their foot steps to make various positive comments about the 968's gorgeous ass (facing the beach from my open garage).



I've owned a few Porsches. That said, the 968 garners more "thumbs-up," smiles and praise than any of the 968's air-cooled bretheren.



It's true that the 968's long, low lines have an Italian car design look/influence. Is this why non-Porschephiles mistake the 968 for a Ferrari?



Maybe.



"Is that a Ferrari?"



"What model Ferrari is that?"



These two questions come up nearly every time the 968 goes out for exercise.



On Saturday, I got the "Ferrari" questions numerous times.



Is this misconception a southern California thing, or do you 968ers get this else where?

Funny you braught this up, I was just telling my wife that i allways wanted a ferrari daytona spyder and

that the 968 had somewhat the same lines and thats why i liked it and she said why didn't you get one , and i asked her if she had a hundred grand <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Around here there are VERY few Ferrari owners (if there they never bring them out). With the 968 if they dont see the Porsche on the butt they just think "sports car" and stair with that "I want one of those" look not even knowing what it is.

I've had my 968 over three years now, and have gotten maybe three inquiries/compliments about it in all that time. I've always figured that since it's not a hulking SUV, it's pretty much invisible to the motoroing public, whose tastes have changed significantly since I was driving around in an Austin Healy BJ8 in the 1980s. Now THAT was an attention-grabbing car! But I have a feeling that today, even the Healey wouldn't generate a great deal of interest, at least not here in central Texas.

I live in So. Cal and here there are many ferraris around especially in the city I live in. They never mistake it for a ferrari but I know if I didn't have Porsche written on the back bumper that they wouldn't be able to figure out what it was. I find that the only people that know anything about my car are the ones that have had a 928, 968, or a 944 before.

Never happen to me and I would think that the only people that would make such a mistake is non-car people.



What Ferrari looks like a 968 anyway? I cant think of one.



however the wide hips, oval headlamps and V shaped hood lines scream Porsche for all in the know.

Never mistaken for a Ferrari, but many admiring stares, many thumbs up and a lot of "what model is this?!" as well as "is this the new Porsh?" questions .. although one person said it looks like a ferrari killer, and asked me how many cylinders it had. Did not have the heart to tell him it's a friggin' four banger so I said it's a small block V12 <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> . Once in a while I also tell people it's a prototype that never made production and I have the only one the world, having won it in a PCA lottery draw. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

The only Ferrari I can think of that looks close is a 250 GTO.

I've owned two 968 cabs, one white and one black over a period of about five years. Neither has earned any questions or compliments to speak of from the general public. Neither young nor old seem to care about an uncommon model of Porsche. But, then, I live Arizona, where SUVs are king. Fortunately I am too old to care about vehicle envy and still enjoy walking into my garage and appreciating the lovely lines of my 968.

I have had two people in the 13 years that I have owned my 968 ask me:



" Is that a Ferrari GTB?" and "Is that a Cobra Coupe?"



The most common question I get is the same as a lot of us get and that is the question about whether this is a new Porsche model. The cars are rare enough that even some long time Porsche owners will not have ever seen one.



I will be parking in the Porsche Corral at the up coming Monterey Historics and I may well be the only 968 there, as was the case at the ALMS race last year.

Over the years my 968 has garnered lots of admiring stares. Just last week it earned one from a jealous 986 driver.



The questions are usually, "What is it?" or "Is that a new Porsche model?" Every once in a while the question is, "Is that a 968? Wow! Really cool." Then I know it's a P-car nut like us.

In Honolulu, where we get 7 million visitors each year, the 968 gets a lot of attention. I've had one "Ferrari" comment, many "Is that the new Porsh?" questions, and countless stares/thumbs up/smiles.

Ditto.



Ya know whats odd? Many 911 drivers don't get that type of attention. I love the curves of the 911 and think its a beautiful car. But because there more common place they don't turn heads as they did say 10- 15 years ago. Perhaps that why the GT3 has the option of more radical colors and logos.

Actually, the Ferrari model that looks closest to a 968 Cab is the '62-'64 GT250 California Spyder (a replica of that Ferrari was used in the movie "Ferris Buellers Day Off" if you want to check out the simularity, though the 968 does have more distinctive Porsche lines to other Porsche models but with a bit more Italian influence than those same other Porsche models). The 968 coupe model on the otherhand has NO Ferrari model that resembles it since Ferrari never made a vehicle with a rear end that ugly! Ha (I'll probably get flamed by a few of you for saying that, but you have to admit that one either loves or hates the look of the coupe model, and I personally think it's BUTT ugly in comparison to the Cab model...pun intended!)



I too often get questions if my 968 Cab is a brand new model that Porsche just came out with, and when I say it is a '94 model they gasp in disbelieve and then give a thumbs up on it!! I do have to admit though, with its long hood line it does sort of appear to have a Ferrari appeal to it compared to all the other Porsche models and it does garner alot more attention than other Porsche models as well. She's quite the beauty that's for sure!!!
