Interesting article in the PCA latest E-Mail
#1

Nice article from the PCA Newsletter on a 968 cab found in Wash DC. Praise for the car and the rarity of the cab. I would think it applied to all 968s. Also will I'm at it there is a very good article in the latest Excellence on motor oils in the Tech Notes area. Stromng recommedation for Motul.

Yes but did you read the comments underneath? Same drivel, poor mans porsche and such. It's a wonder why this car is so criticized by those that don't drive it.

that's easy - if they drove one, they'd never go back to a 911, and that would be hard to explain to their loafer wearing buddies.

Hey, we know what it's like to drive this car and what a great looking car it is. I was at Office Depot yesterday and a guy with an SUV said what a great looking car I had. That's what is all about. Although I do like the 911 and it's derivatives and have driven a few of them, the 968 is right there we the best of them.

for me, the 911 is everything i hate in a car. it might as well be a camry. i've never liked any of them (except the 996 turbo, but even then only from the outside). the interiors are boring and ill-conceived. the cars are nervous. compared to their competition, they are heavy and slow (unless you get a turbo). they are over-priced. the engine is at the wrong end.

i've never understood the attraction. for the kind of money they want for a 911, i can think of a number of cars i would rather have.

but then, that's why i have a 968. it has most of the traits i like in a car. those it didn't have, i have now added. if only i could figure out how to remove all the things on the car that say "porsche".................

The one thing I love about the 968 is that it truly connects you to the driving experience. It can also haul a ton of stuff while doing it.

I just read the article about the 968 in the PCA Newsletter. It was an article from Jalopnik, which is a really neat site for "car related" articles.

Here is the link: http://jalopnik.com/5975073/this-porsche.../gallery/1

The posts/comments after the article are mostly from people who have NO idea what a 968 drives/handles like. Their loss...

To most motoring journalists - anything that is not a 911 is a "poor man's Porsche" - simply because you did not pay over the odds for a 911. It is the brand snobbery at its best. Same goes for the Boxster - it is a poor man's Porsche - as if anything that has a Porsche label on it could be classified as being either cheap or suitable for people of low disposable income (the depreciation alone on any new Porsche would make your eyes water).

I wonder what they will be calling the Turbo Panamera in the future - as it is the most expensive Porsche routinely for sale (if you exempt the 911 RS - GT3/GT2 and Porsche Design 911's). It is like the comments that a Panamera is not a Porsche or that the Cayene is not a Porsche. What will the Cagun be - I suppose not a Porsche. Even if the Cayene and Cajun are engineered off Audi/VW platforms (Toureg/Q7 and Q5 repectively) - the differences are still there in body styling (if not engines for the diesels).

If you were to limit being a true Porsche to any vehicle that did not share its architecture with another VW group vehicle - then probably of the modern era, only the 911 and Boxster and Cayman are "true" Porsches.

Poor Man's Porsche - that is an oxy-moron if I ever heard one.

Flash, I couldn't disagree more with your take on the 911. I have owned a '68 911E and it was a great car. I like everything you don't like about the 911. It is in my opinion it's a great car with a design that has lasted 46 years. Ergo, they must be doing something right. As for the snobbish appeal that's okay by me. I don't want to be just another Camry or SUV owner How blah is that. I've been a Porsche owner for 25+ years and enjoy all the PCA activities. I have never been poo-pooed for having a 968, most members have nothing be admiration for the 968. The driving charateristics of the 911 are exceptional as are the 968s. Everyone has cars they like and dislike that's why there are so many models out there. Everyone can get a car they can afford and has the characteristic they can live with or enjoy. i suppose this discussion could go on forever. Viva La Difference!

lol - i think they are just being nice. if you asked them if they would own one if it meant giving up their 911, i'm betting most would say "no"

the list of things i hate about the 911 is long. it starts with the sound. no matter what they do, it stills sounds like a bug or a hoover. the engine is at the wrong end. the cars are all too tall and bulbous. the engine is at the wrong end. they all either look like a stretched out vw bug in earlier models, or look like a two week old bar of soap in later ones. the engine is at the wrong end. the ergonomics are horrible. the engine is at the wrong end. the interiors look like they came out of a hyundai. the engine is at the wrong end. they are grossly overpriced. did i mention that the engine is at the wrong end?

but, you're right. everybody likes something different. i like a car the way god intended. engine in the front. drive in the rear. clearly there is a very large contingent that likes the 911. no worries. somebody has to pick up the rear.

Ok... we need to settle this now!

Is Jeremy Clarkson stealing Flash's wording or vice-versa! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/icon_lol1.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Rear engines look perfectly fine in various Ferraris....ok, I suppose most of those are labeled Mid-Rear, but still they're behind the cabin and I have to say that having that power plant behind you makes for a more exhilarating driving experience than having the engine in front of the car . But the weird sound and revs of the 911 six cyl in the back does nothing for me.

Has anybody read Motor Trend's issue from a couple of months ago in which they selected the world's best driving car, regardless of price? It was strange that there weren't any Ferrari's in the test (although the Lamborghini Aventador and the Mclaren whatever-it's-called was in the test), but regardless, the margin of victory of the 911 over the rest of the field was possibly the largest of any comparison test I've ever read in any magazine. And it wasn't just a bunch of magazine editors doing the testing - successful racers like Randy Probst were among the testers. The things that were stressed were the driving dynamics - road feel, cornering attitude, stability (e.g. lack of nervousness), ride/handling trade-off, etc. I think a lot of the criticisms of the 911 apply to previous generations of the car, but not to the 991. I understand that the 911's engine location is not optimal, but Porsche seems to have defied the laws of physics in creating one of the best cars of all time in the 911's current incarnation. Now its looks and sound are subjective, of course.

To each his own. Personally, I'm glad all those 911 people look down on the 968. It makes me feel a little better about driving a Porsche (I'm with Flash on this one). And if they all drooled over 968's, mine would have cost me a bit more money.

By the way Flash, I'm a little unclear about your opinion of rear engine cars. Didn't you like the rear engine 928 they put together on Mythbusters? lol

I think the MythBusters 928 was less rear-engined than bass-ackwards.
