K&N Air/Oil filter......is it worth it?
#1

Debating whether I should shift to K&N filters when it's time. Anyone with experience? Do they make a difference?

Air, yes.  Oil?  I use the Mahle filters, but a number of folks use the Canton.  I've had no issues...

K&N oil filter is better than mahle, but not by much (a few microns)

definitely helps on the air filter, and my dyno tests proved it.  it is responsible for about 40% of the 11hp the airbox mod generates.

DO NOT OVER-OIL!!!

Thing is, it's very hard to get some real data about the efficiency of a particular brand or model of oil filter. Microns apparently tell only a small part of the story.

Here's some reading for those interested:

... and apparently some nut made a complete study about oil filters. Interesting read, especially since he makes clear which ones are junk and are to be avoided. Fram -and obviously it's clones- for instance, are a no go.

As for the "German filters", Mann has the most surface area and the strongest case. The model used for our cars is the 719/22. I use those ever since I bought the 968. They are not cheap, but I don't know if they are even available over in the US.

I think Purolator is a good choice for those of the New World, but by all means make up your own mind:

For air filters, I was wondering if the K&N makes much difference without the air box mod.  In other words I am not sure how to interpret Flash's data with the combination of K&N and the air box mod.   Perhaps providing more air flow via the filter alone, without the mod, doesn't provide much additional airflow.

My other car life (the Vanagon Syncro) is square in the offroad area.  With this group the K&N is actually verbotten since it will allow more fine grained dirt through in comparison to a paper filter.   Probably not a big deal with our 968s since we don't offroad them, but vehicles used in dusty places should not have a K&N filter.

I used the drop in K&N Air Filter and the air box mod on a previous 968 and noticed a nice bump.  As for the K&N oil filter its readily available in local parts stores or if your like me an stock up for all your vehicles and future services K&N's website offers free shipping (says the flow rate is better, the nut on the end of the housing helps get the old one off!)

it makes me crazy when i hear people talking about the k&n "allowing more dirt in".  it's purely myth, and a carryover from decades gone by.  sure, in a carburetted car, there is a small chance of this becoming an issue, but in a fuel injected car, the size and composition of the particulates that may get through are so insignificant that they will be burnt in combustion.  that being said, i have NEVER seen any evidence of anything getting through a properly oiled k&n and having any negative effects, including on carburetted cars.

This moron is actually complaining about buying a 12-something USD cleaning kit for his air filter. Ok. But why does he buy the filter in the first place? It would help if he would know what he spends his money on befóre he buys something. Besides, where does he drive so that he has to clean the thing every 6 months?

For the record, I do have K&N air filter on my car.   Installed within a few weeks of purchase, but no air box mod, didn't even know about that at the time.   Who knows why, I certainly didn't take an engineering view on it, maybe just figured it was good practice or  ...... cool.

He could shave his beard and use that as a filter, that thing will trap every particle on the planet in it . Hopefully he cleans it more frequently than he does the filter . Bozo.

But there is always a faction of people that agree with him and who think the K&N is not as good as the OE filters, or the Canton oil filter is not as good as the OE ones, so on and so forth.. nothing but anecdotal stories and a handful of dubious sources "tests" which occasionally give rise to those arguments. For everyone of those negative results there are a dozen positive ones , contradicting the pundits .

FWIW, I've had K&Ns in all my cars ( typically I have five or six cars them at any given time ) , MBZs, Porsches, various SUVs, throughout many years , and completely satisfied with them .

On the beard thing, I've heard that French women carry their K&N filters a bit 'lower'. Which means I have an unlimited supply reasonably close by. I have yet to confirm this rumour though.
