Importing 968 from USA to Canada
#1

Can anyone recommend a reputable, competent brokerage company that will ship a U.S. car to Canada as well as handle all the necessary paperwork?

I've looked on-line at all the hoops and documentation required and it's daunting. I'd rather just pay someone (within reason) to get it done.

I'm considering moving a car from California to BC, Canada so would appreciate help with West Coast firms. It's easily driveable myself but it's not the drive that concerns me -- it's all the forms and letters and faxes.

Suggestions, please. (A rough idea of what to budget for this would be good, too). Thanks!

kreeshp,

I'm not aware of a brokerage firm that would handle all of the paperwork, but I do know that Intercity Lines has a sterling reputation when it comes to closed transport. I'm not sure if they ship to Canada, however; perhaps another member can speak to this. As to cost, just to give you a figure, when I requested a quote recently to ship my car from Virginia to California (I'm wanting to drive the PCH from SoCal to Washington State), the figure was $2000. I don't know if I have helped you at all, but thought I would take the time to give you my two cents.

The transportation is the easy part. I just recently brought in a 968 from MA to Ontario. It was shipped via AA Auto Transport (http://www.aa-auto.com/) directly to a bonded warehouse, so it bypassed Canada Customs at the border. Total shipping cost was about $850.00US. However, to get it released from bond, you need to show customs a number of documents that only you can get: Form 1 mailed to you by the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (http://www.riv.ca/), copy of the Recall letter from Porsche Cars North America, Sales Receipt. You have to pay BOTH GST and Duty to Customs (as the car was not made in North America). Best to start with the RIV site, it has all the information that you need. But beware, it too almost 6 weeks to get all the paper work from the various sources, and then you have to get an RIV inspection and do modifications to bring up to Canadian standards such as Day Time Running lights, child safety seat tether anchors etc.

Send me a PM if you need any other information.

If the car is '93 or older, it is exempt from RIV inspection and fees. Duty and GST is what you'll have to pay at the border. The US Customs need a fax of the title sent to them 72 hours before importation, you bring them the car, they verify the VIN and you're on your way. I just brought a '89 S2 from Virginia to Ontario, flew out of Buffalo, New York, at 6:40 am, was driving back at 11:30, spent the night just outside of Pittsburgh, crossed the border at 11:00 am, a little over 24 hours total. Pick up an out of state trip permit at their DMV, have the car insured, it's really not that difficult and a lot of fun, as long as the car makes it home! Done this twice now and will do it again, the selection of good cars in the US is fantastic, and with our $$, they're a great deal.

Good Luck

Yeah, no kidding... When I was in Canada back in May of 1998, I remember getting 1.35 CAD for 1 USD. How times have changed! Sigh... At the rate the USD is going, it won't be long before the Mexican Nuevo Peso overtakes it...
