images and avatars (sung to incense and peppermints)
#1

lately i've been doing some work on the site resizing images and such - this is to get everything to fit on the screen without scrolling - there are obviously different resolution setting of the members, and it consequently changes the needs, and i have to consider them all - as an example, while it is a pretty equal split at about 35% each of 1024x768 and 33% at 1280 by either 1024 or 800, we still have a few (11 users) with 800x600, and at least 52 users are still on dialup, so big images are a problem

to that point, i've been reducing the attachments and such - some of this has gone well, some is still hiccuping a bit - to further complicate things, many of the files were damaged or lost in the server change - i'm still working on recovering those files

at this time, i have turned off the automatic resize that was taking every image and resizing it to fit on smaller screens - while you could still click on the image to get it full size, it was upsetting some people - i thought it was better, because each post took up less room, so you could scroll down vertically easier, but perhaps not - i can always go back

for now, i have set it to fit on a 1024x768 without horizontal scrolling, but the 800x600 people will have to scroll

if you have noticed your avatar changed from big to smaller, that was me - this is a manual process, and i have to do them one by one - i have been resetting them all to a max size of 160 pixels wide by 120 tall - if you have one that is bigger, please upload a smaller one, and save me the time - if you think your avatar is too small, feel free to load a new one to fit that size - file size max is 50k

this is your chance to jump in and help define the form of the website - there is a poll for this - please give us your feedback so that we can divine what the members truly want

thanks in advance

I voted for "full size right away" because it is my preference.

But in reality it does not matter to me, so long as I get to see pics. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

IMHO, it is probably best to let the software handle it, because there are lots of users who

are not skilled in resizing photos.

no can do outside of the gallery - resizing must be done by the user - software not capable in the attachments

I myself don't mind clicking a thumbnail to see the big picture. Also the smaller avatars are a non-issue.

I'm more than OK with thumbs for the pics inserted into threads. It makes is a lot easier to scroll through, especially an old thread, and it loads faster.

I would not want an avatar as a thumb or a boxed image. Small image as currently exists is fine.

Sorry I'm not familiar with incense and peppermints... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I voted for thumbnails, as that has always seemed to have been the standard for internet based photo things. Now, that being said, thumbnails can be different sizes, so there's some gray area there. Clicking on something to see it full size or opening in a new window seems like normal internet browsing to me.

Now for the more important issue, how many of us can actually hum the tune to "incence and peppermints" <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I can't stand it when someone posts up a f$%^ing huge photo where I wish I could back up 50 feet to view the whole thing. It should be automatically sized to fit the average screen. If you want to see the full photo, just give it a click!

roflmao - never i say - never - all kneel and pay homage to the god of all things 968 - no upstart will ever take that away.................

oh wait - i thought i was somebody else for a minute

never mind

i'll close the poll after we get a couple of dozen responses - that should be a fair sampling of at least the big swing - right now it's still too close between reduced size and thumbnail, but at least it seems clear that full size is not the preference - that is exactly why i had it the way i did - i only changed it to full size because of a very vocal member - my bad for reacting too quickly

As close as it is, I think we need to go a manual recount of the votes, we could have some hanging chads out there..
