Charles Geer Race Car For Sale
#1

Hey guys, and gals I'm selling my F stock 968 racer. It's got 4 races on it. It has a new motor. The last one fried when the oil pick up tube cracked. MOTON remote reservoir shocks, full welded roll cage 67000 miles on the chassis. Perfect car, Perfect looking, never wrecked. NEW MOTOR cost $4700.oo. Motor is stock just like the motor that I fried. Recommended that you get the reinforced oil pick up tube. I've thought long and hard about this and it hurts to sell such a great car...but I'm going Cayman Racing...may wait for the clubsport to be revealed then I'll trick the suspension and get back to the track.

968 Racer $28,500 with new engine.

Results 2005

Road Atlanta 2005 Fastest lap, Pole winner 1st place

Sebring 2005 3rd Fastest lap, 3rd place finish to Gary Grigsby and Terry Heath.

Here are some pics.

Charles,

What wheels have you got on in that picture?

Are they BBS LM's?

DE rides available. Wheels in pic are hollow magnesium bbs wheels from my cup car, I practice and qualify with the bbs and race the stock 17 inch wheels.

YOU WILL GET THE STOCK WHEELS WITH PURCHASE. BBS wheels not for sale.

Bummer.

Thought they were. Shame they are not for sale.

Are they from a 996 cup car?

Sorry to hear you're leaving the 968 after only 4 races. Sounds like it is setup well for F class.

Just curious, where was the crack in your pickup tube? I just had my oil pan off to refresh the rod bearings and I checked over the pickup but I didn't visually see anything wrong so I left it alone.

I love those BBS. Magnesium centers I presume. Seems backwards to practice/qualify on the BBS then race on the stock wheels - but I'm sure you had a good reason.

Best of luck,

Eric

The BBS LMs were quicker on my cup car (by just a few tenths per lap) because of the heavy rear end of a 911. On the 968 the 17 inch wheels allow for the taller rear tires which have a "ballooning" or softening effect to the 1000 lbs springs that I run on the 968.

Because the 968 has a relatively light rear end you would normally run a "softer" spring in the rear. I opted not to do that being that I was more familiar with running 1400 lb springs that come stock on a 993 Supercup.

Because the tall tires (On the 17 inch stock wheels) ballooned (bounced) it in essence absorbed some of the stiffness of the stiff rear springs.

On the 18 inch BBS wheels you have 285 / 30 / 18 tires which are going to be extremely stiff becuse of their low profile. You are now adding stiff tires to stiff springs on a light rear end car which is not a optimal combination. Although this setup works well for cup cars (because the entire ass end of the car takes up 67% of the entire weight car) this is not ideal for the 968.

At every track we run we will try the 18 inch BBS wheels versus the 17 inch stock wheels. We would be 2 tenths of a second a lap slower on the BBS wheels at every track.

If you ran the same test on a 911 the result would be just the opposite.

You're oil pick up tube needs to be reinforced at the base of the tube where the tube is connected to the bracket which connects to the engine. The resonance of these big 3 liters will snap it in half under the right conditions. Me, Gary Grigsby and Donna Amico (clubracer) have all had this happen to us.

If your variocam is noisy (sounds like the chain is scraping the cam cover) at idle, it is because the oil pick up tube is sucking air through the crack which is in essence frying your bearings and is not pressurizing your variocam tensioner.

BUY A NEW OIL PICK UP TUBE IMMEDIATELY AND HAVE IT BRACKETED FOR REINFORCEMENT AT THE BASE.

RETENSION YOUR BALANCE SHAFT BELTS TO PERFECT SETTINGS BEFORE EVERY RACE.

(Your balance shaft belt does not have to jump teeth to put the motor out of balance under extreme race conditions. This motor creates more resonance than a dental plaque remover used for cleaning your teeth...again the balance shaft settings have got to be perfect for this motor to run in harmony. YOU WONT SEE YOUR MOTOR VIBRATE...BUT PUT A WINE GLASS OF YOUR FAVORITE MERLOT ON THE HOOD AND I GUARANTEE YOU AT FULL THROTTLE IT WILL PUSH IT ALL OUT WITHOUT A DROP LEFT IN THE GLASS.)

Good advice, that was learned the hard way. Too bad I just put everything back together in preparation for a race next weekend. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> I would think good motor mounts would also be important. I did find one of mine was giving up.

I have also found my laptimes a little off when I run 18's. I had put it down to different feel of the stiffer effective spring rate of the suspension and that my 18 fronts are slightly narrower than my 17's. I don't run as heavy of rear spring (700lb) as you but there may be something to that.

I'm really interested in this discussion because I run 700 lbs in the rear and 750lbs up front...and I'm about to order some new 18" wheels.

Currently I have CCW wheels and recently I got 3 cracks on one of my rears. I've had them for about 3 years and I think it's time to get new wheels at this point. So I'm thinking of BBS or Fikse.

But, since we lightened the car I've wondered if I should consider different springs.

Too much going on here I think...just get new wheels and deal with the other stuff later!

Probably should start another topic for this discussion but personally I think 18 inch wheels are over rated. We don't really know why we are using them.

For instance...See if you can answer these questihons without looking at the cheat sheet.

Which wheels have a shorter diameter 18 inch or 17 inch wheels. Every body including my self gets the answer wrong. Your car sit's on tires and not wheels.

The 275 / 40 / 17 tires fit so tall on the 17 inch wheels that the 17 inchers stand taller than the 285 / 30 / 18 inch tires that you see on the rears of the BBS 18 in wheels.

Which means. The 18 inch wheels shortens the gears (considerably on my car).

Although I like the shorter gears the rear tires on the 18 inch wheels are just to damn stiff for 1000 lb springs (again we're talkin 2 tenths of a second...but 2 tenths is the diference between 3rd place or 7th place).

If a track is perfectly flat the 18 inchers with this high spring rate would be ideal.

The wider track of the 285 / 18 as compared to 275 17 does nothing to improve grip ( again on my car)

Truthfully, both set up on new hoosiers are extremely sticky and if you are going to stick with 700 lb springs the 18 inch wheels ahould be ideal.

Jason,

Just got back from Pocono. Finally could run the car hard enough to start working on setup. I am a fan of the 18" wheels. I like the low profile stiff sidewall. I have the BBS mag centered as the car ran in Germany ADAC GT Cup races.I am running 600in/lbs front and 500in/lbs rear. car weighs about 2600 at this point. gearing seems fine with RS gearbox. Taped out in 5th for turn one. probably about 145-150mph. This leaves 6th. I think at the glen or summit 160 max.

Pete,

Glad to hear you're getting it all worked out.

2,600 lbs is quite respectable, too! I'm a little over that at the moment at about 2,640 lbs. Got to do the rear hatch swap for Lexan.
