So, been re-reading some posts and there seems to be an overwhelming consensus regarding fixing things up: Once one thing is done, there's ALWAYS another waiting for our attention.

Between engine rebuilds, turbo conversions (THAT WORK!), exhaust upgrades, weight reduction, installing new stereos and GPS, the elusive headlight conversion, upholstery, et al... there is an unending laundry list of things that make our cars very modern for its near 20 years of age. The question is, if money truly was no matter (and with out completely going overboard - without crossing from daily driver to showcar), how much money would it take to return the car to new condition.

Turbo
RSBarn Cat-back and all their wonderful upgrades for a street car
new carpet that stays put
new seats
express windows
new CD/DVD player
GPS
Hardtop Cab
Tonneau
weight reduction
18" wheel upgrade?
new paint
replace windshield

Of course, the debate will come up - if you're gonna spend this much money, why not buy a Cayman? Because if I wanted a Cayman, I wouldn't be on 968Forums [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif[/img]

lol - no worries - i'm as guilty as anyone of spending way more than the car is worth on things for the car - i think i've got about $45k in mods at this point

to answer the question though, it would cost about $45k plus or minus to complete your list

that's a pretty complete list - i've done almost all of it - while i've already spent the $45k, a lot is due to development of new stuff, which would not translate to repetition on a different car

obviously you can spend more, depending on a lot of things, but you can also spend a bit less - i was picking a number for a reasonable project budget

i'm guessing that when i am done i will have about $55k into mine (not counting the purchase at $28.5k) - that's not that bad, considering what she'll do - my original total estimate was $75-80k - i'm not far off of that projection

lol - if i were a hardtop guy, i might do the same thing, though i would still probably have to spend a good $20k on it to set up the suspension, do the wheels and tires, a real stereo, yada yada

then i'd be in for a lot more than what i will be for this car, and at that point, i'd be driving a ferrari

But Back on topic, I am starting to think that dynamatting the car, and overhauling the suspension and bushes are probably on the best things you can do to make it feel more luxurious and up to date

i'd have a very hard time even putting a 968 turbo in the same league with a ferrari (and i'm thinking either 355 or a 360) - sort of like trying to put a '64 ford falcon in the same league with a new corvette

that being said, the primary reasons i bought this car still hold - it is a 2 seat ragtop, manual trans, front engine, rear drive, that can carry 2 sets of golf clubs, 2 cases of wine, and a weekend of luggage, all without using the passenger seat - the ferrari can't do that, but it is a superior performer in all respects, and it does that right out of the box

Hmmm, with the 599 you've got everything but the ragtop. For that you gotta go with the California and, strictly speaking for myself, its my least favorite Ferrari. But they do make a good handling GT FR convert with trunk space.

That's basically what I am talking about creating. Just starting with the car I already have. would take less money to recreate it than buy one...

This thread really demonstrates a universal truth - to get a truly superior car, you need to spend about $80K. Whether it's a brand new Cayman (rated by Motor Trend as the best "driver's car" in the world), a used Ferrari, a Z06, or an older car like a 968, modded to be competitive with the others mentioned, about $80K is what it takes. Kind of makes sense - what's a car but a collection of parts? It doesn't matter much how the parts are collected; when you gather them up and put them together into an entity known as a high performance car, you're gonna spend about $80K.

And I agree with the O.P.'s list, but to make a 968's handling competitive with the likes of a new Cayman, throw in a minimum of $5K in suspension mods. So, take Flash's estimate of $45K for the mods the O.P. listed, the original price of the car, the cost of the suspension mods, and then add a few other goodies like a lightweight flywheel, short shift kit, some nicer (and lighter) seats, and you're right up to, guess what? - about $80K. But the lottery payout should easily cover that, so no worries [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]

I would buy the garage next to RS Barn and store my car there. After a complete part by part, nut and bolt R & R complete with all possible modifications and cosmetic repair and detailing I would drive the car as much as I wanted and then return it to the Barn so that the car is equally as perfect every time I drive it.

yup - 80k is pretty much it - that's why i am teetering on a ferrari - i can get one i like now for about that much - i think i am going to wait until we move though - i am out of garage space now, and i have 3 more cars coming in the not too distant future - i am already looking for shop space
