cold start sound
#1

I was takling to flash about about this yesterday and then tested a few things ( heater on/off with start, AC on/off with start, etc ) but the sound does not change. I also cannot pinpoint any place on the engine where it may be more prominent than elsewhere. best I can describe is : a combination of hissing and chirping

( crickett-like) but very mild for both of those tones, which happens only on cold starts in the morning, follows the speed of the engine, and does last for quite a few minutes.

any clues, ideas what I may want to check out ? Bob will stethoscope this when I'm there in a couple of weeks but wondering if anyone else here might have experineced something similar and discovered what the problem was / solution ? Or any theories ?

Thanks

I would suggest checking the tension of the alternator belt, since it is after you start your car up. When the alternator is charging up the battery after the car has just started, even the slightest bit of looseness will make a sound like you are describing. The alternator belt is set extremly tight. Try giving the adjuster a little twist to put some more tension on the belt, and see if that solves your problem. Remember to loosen the bolts on the top of the A/C compressor before you do so, broken ears aren't fun.

thanks, gave that a shot this morning. unfortunately the chirping/hissing is still there.

wish I could have my mech. check it out before I drive 400 mi to SoCal and track the car at the end of this month, but it takes 10 minutes to get to his shop and by that time the noise is gone. and then you have to wait a looong time to hear this again, because the engine has to be stone cold. guess i'll just have to leave it with him overnight - PITA to do that, but if it's something more serious than a loose belt or some alt. bearing just starting to go bad...i may be in for an unpleasant surprise at the worse possible time. I was thinking just because there is no rattle or knocking sound it can't be a big deal, but I don't know jack about anything mechanical so not a good idea for me to assume anything .

i may also add the sound has been there for at least half a year, and has not gotten worse ( either louder, or different tones, etc ) all this time. always the same..

A spray-on belt lubricant won't fix a worn or loose belt but it will quiet it momentarily. A possible diagnostic tool.
