I've seen the Cayman..And it is Good!
#1

Fellow racers. Not since the 968 will a Porsche have achieved cornering capability like the Cayman. PCNA (Porsche Cars North America) put a Silver Cayman on display at the local Porsche dealership in Atlanta. I have driven by the dealership at least 6 times to gaulk at it. I almost cried when I saw it for the first time. I got on my knees to look under it...Boy...It sure looks well built. I know it's basically a hard top boxter...But this ain't yo daddy's boxter. Porsche (Germany) Test driver Walter Rohrl claims that this car has been subdued for "marketing reasons" (ie. Please don't hurt the future of the Carrera). He knows why Porsche is not currently offering this car with Limited Slip differential and adjustable sway bars (Mo30). According to Walter, the limited slip would have put the Cayman over the top at the Nubergring against the Carrera.

As a 968 and Carrera owner I can tell you that my 968 (racer) will run circles around my Carrera (turbo 91').

The Cayman may force Porsche to up the power even more on the Carrera, or turn the motor 180 degrees so that it can maintain it's position in performance history.

Charles-

I've seen one also-at the local dealership-looks fast and low. How's the red 968 doing? Have you decided on Sebring yet?

I think I'm going to take a year off to build up some funds. I recently purchased a 944 that I am renting out at the track for about 500.oo per weekend to see if I can help support this habit.

So far, one happy customer..looking for more.

Patrick Small (E class 944 turbo S) will be out there in Grand Am with you in a new cup.

There were 4 Caymans sitting in the garage at Barber this weekend and 6 more were on their way. This week is the first chance the press are going to get to drive the car and they are doing it a Barber. I managed to get into the garage to look them over, and I agree, they look really good

The Cayman will be a great buy in 3 years when they come off of lease. It is easy to configure a $80K Cayman S. For that kind of money you are almost touching an 04' GT3 or an 02-03 996 Turbo. When they have been depreciating for 3-4 years the value will be there. Until then Porsche will make there money on the Non Enthusiast... aka Wanabe's

The Cayman is the only new Porsche that makes me question 968 ownership. I agree that they would be a better value used and easier to park beside the 968. Unless I find a deal on a Flachbau

It doesn't come with a spare tire. The compressor has a Fix-A-Flat type material that it puts into the tire to fix a flat. I guess that settles our discussion about wheather it is okay to use fix-a-flat or not.

lol - yeah - a perfectly fine emergency solution, unless you really blew the tire, but you still need to go directly to the tire shop and get that gunk out of there asap, and get it fixed for real - and take money for a tip - they hate that stuff

on topic - i have to admit, that i think it looks the best of all the current models - i am not a hatchback guy, but the lines are good, and a heck of a lot better than any of the 911s of recent years - i'll bet new 911 model prices get a rise soon

Still not a fan... I suppose the car's lines could grow on me, but I tend to doubt it..

Furthermore, here's a car with more than a decade of advanced technology ( and an additional 2 cyl, LOL ) vs. our cars , yet providing performance that's, IMHO, comparatively negligible above that of a chipped, airbox-holed, aftermarket catbacked 968. Uh , given the price difference... not anytime soon for me.

If you think about it, the Caymen is less expensive than a 968, at least new. Our cars were in the upper 50k range, which is the base price for the Caymen. Given the inflation rate over the past 11-14, that makes it a bargain.

Tim,

Absolutely right, from that standpoint. ( great as a car as the 968 was / is , the price new was way too high for that era.. )

I was just hypothesizing a current scenario with a choice of spending $ 17k + for a low mileage 968 coupe vs. almost $ 60k for a cayman... given the difference between the two, I'd buy three 968s

I would tend to agree with Eric S on this- in a few years, maybe more than 3- say 5, I think the Caymen will be an excellent buy.

The engine and chassis have significantly more potential than initially equipped, and extracting that potential may very well be easier than extracting similar gains from our beloved 968. Read "less money required for BIG HP gains".

I think the overall exterior design of the Caymen is wonderful- very sechsey!

My only two (2) gripes are: 1) I feel the interior (specifically the steering wheel and the center console with NAV) doesn't flow very well. It looks too "pieced together". I really dislike the new steering wheel design Porsche is using in the Caymen and 997. Looks like it belongs in a SUV concept car. 2) I am also not a big fan of the standard wheel designs on the Caymen and 997. But, I could live with it should someone deside to donate a Caymen to me!

Now if they would just bite the bullet and offer a CS or RS lightweight version, DAMN! I may have to take out a second and a THIRD mortgage! Can I do that?

I really hate the fact that Porsche bows to the 911 for all things. From all credible accounts, with the appropriate factory mods, this little bugger would smoke a 997 on a true race track. At least Porsche did build 16 or so 968 Turbo S cars.... maybe they would do a similar deal with Caymen. At least make some factory parts available to upgrade the car.

Just my rant....

I like the car and would certainly buy one if the opportunity presented itself.

if they get the approval for a race class, they will be releasing a "club sport" version - there are political problems right now though, from the exisitng classes - gee, imagine that

My Fifteen minutes of fame. Just thumb through the latest Porsche book at Barnes and Nobles "Porsche 911 perfection by design" This has got to be the biggest, heaviest book ever written about automobiles.

As I was thumbing through the pages, somewhere around page 256 I could not believe my eyes, It's a picture of my old 993 Cup Car that I sold a year ago.

Boy, sure liked to have that car back.

Dave, I went to the local dealer yesterday to see the new Cayman S they have on display. No way we can carry four wheels and tires, floor jack, cooler, folding chairs, luggage and wife in the Cayman S like we can in the 968. Still, it looks lovely in the flesh. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.
