New RS BARN Spec Cams..... Bring it Daytona!
#1

Finally.... the very much coveted and secretly guarded RS BARN spec cams are going in! Soooo excited....

I am super fortunate to have Pete just 10 minutes from me, so while the #75 RS Barn - AJ Hartman Racing - Hoosier Porsche 968 rested on jack stands being prepared for Daytona... look who dropped-in with some shiny new weird looking rods... and some funky gauges to time them...? Whot? we can't time those uneven assymetric entropic looking rod contraptions with my Seiko watch?

Looks cool. Are these cams a race type cam that gives more top end power at the expense of low down torque? What sort of power band are you expecting?

Nice to see Pete with some dirt under his fingernails again

Can't wait to see how much success with the new set-up.

Should give us more HP and Torque above 5,000 which is all that matters to me. I'll let Pete answer in more detail but these are track stage cams. New injectors are also being installed to complement the more aggressive cam setup. We'll see what the dyno shows after he does his tuning magic....

Can I drive them on street if I promise to keep WOT???

Sounds like they're tailor-made for DS968!

Cams are stock with reground lobes. There is a good and bad way to do this. Newer techniques can produce more duration without reducing lift. I've tested modified cams that didn't make any more power.

These are still pretty mild and produce more HP and TQ from 3K to 6700rpm. The intake manifold pulse tuning limits power curve above 6500, even with Monster Cams on my GT motor.

Other than funky idle they could be driven on street, but are not really compatable for street car.

LOL, but not quite .. I need something to sustain the increase in acceleration beyond 6800 rpm ( the point where my power curve drops as it it fell off a cliff ) in spite of the Racer X chip which should theoretically enable it to go quite a bit beyond that.. And no, the SC will not do it, so I'll have to live with the top end speed where it is right now..which is still not too shabby for an 18 year old car with a sub-$15K market value

Cam swap and tuning results are in. FantastiK indeed. The RS Barn - Hoosier - AJ Hartman Racing #75 Porsche 968 will be happier at Daytona....

110% of the credits go to Pete at RS Barn. All by himself, while I was either at work or traveling on business, Pete worked away and got it done with time to spare for Daytona next week (Oct 5-7). After several iterations of cam installation, swaps, timing, and dyno tuning over the past few weeks as a result of a vendor spec'ing mistake, he finally had the cams that meet his specifications in the car. His surprise to me was the Throttle body he swapped to make the package work even better.

Yesterday's tuning session at R/T Tuning's awesome in-ground Dynojet 224x was short and sweet. A happy one. Just like we like them! 240 Max Power with 221 Max Torque (Correction Factor: STD, Smoothing: 4).

What the car has:
 1. RS Barn Spec Cams and cam timing

 2. RS Barn Spec Throttle Body

 3. RS Barn Spec Fuel Injectors

 4. Stock Head (Heavily Abused 3-5 Racing Years)

 5. Stock Exhaust Manifold

 6. Custom exhaust downstream of manifold

 7. RS Barn Custom Race-centric Dyno Tuned Chip

Cheers and as always, thanks for your support!

PS: Please refrain from hijacking the thread to theoryfantasize about dyno variations, etc, etc, etc....

Good stuff! I assume this is at the wheels, so we're talking a gain of around 40hp or so?

Also very interesting to see the effects of the variocam system on the curves...

Yes, great stuff. About how much of a gain did the new cams and other items produce? If this is information you'd rather not divulge, I understand completely. Thanks.

Thanks everyone.... We have several cameras and will even try to stream life from an in-car iPhone.... I'll post links once we set it up...

Lou! I'll be the one following you around until I learn how to drive in that place! We should be arriving Thursday early afternoon if it all goes well. Just finished loading (3:00 am indeed). I still need to pack my gear and stuff. Looking forward to meeting you!

Pete has been epic in the Daytona support. From the cams to spares and tools... thanks to him I am confident that I am actually prepared to do it all if need be.... I am even hoping he can escape for a day or two and fly down for the fun...

We are going there to win but the GT5S rules have the odds stacked big time against us... Lets just say 270-300 hp 911 running 2,700 pounts are going to be a slight challenge in Daytona.... the epitamy of the power track... Nonetheless, we are going in swingin'!!!

Cheers!

I have more things to test when Pablo gets back. I really believe we can get 250 rwhp.

The same mods should get my GT motor to 310 RWHP.

That is impressive! Nice to see these advancements on the race track, hopefully to find their way into street cars.
