Don't worry, it is a motorcycle. 2009 BMW 1200 GS Adventure

Now I can start planning my trip to ride down to South America.

I am so jealous! I had the previous model R 1150 GS Adventure, but sold it about 5 years ago. Still miss it.

I hope you are going to have lots of fun on it. I can recommend the BMW off-road academy.

I was looking at doing the offroad academy next month. They have a place in California, and also in North Carolina. Which did you go to? I am in California, but the one in NC lets you use their bikes and I would rather drop theirs instead of my brand new beast.

You can have your aerodynamics, I will be hitting any and all terrain that is thrown at me. This is arguably the best bike out there for riding around the world, and I want to head to South America.

I did my training in South Africa, so I don't think that is an option for you. While renting a bike is a good idea to save your bike from damage, learning to ride your own bike outweighed it for me. You don't want to learn on a 650 or a bike with completely different balance from your. I did the training on my own bike...fell about 10 times during the course and only had 1 little scrape on the tank afterwards. If you're going to go aound the world...why not get the first fall on it as soon as possible....the first scracht is the deepest

I would be renting the exact same bike, but you certainly have a point. I was thinking of renting for the first time, since I don't have much experience, and then using my own for future classes. You are right though, this is a beefy bike and should take a beating pretty good.

Anyone else have motorcycles? I have an old Kawasaki 454 LTD that is sitting around. It doesn't run very well, I think it needs a carb cleaning. I want to tinker around with that one and learn a few things before I do any work on the new bike.

I was very close to buying a Harley Crossbones because I love the older look of the front end. This ine has the chopped rear fender whinc looks better, but is not standard..
