Hows your mileage after chipping?
#1

Did you guys notice a change in the mileage you got after chipping?

I can't say that it got any better, but I don't regularly track mileage either. It also has a lot to do with the psychological factor too. The more juice you have, the more often you use it. Technically, chips do only two things: bump fuel and timing. The former can increase consumption and the latter can reduce it.

That sure is a long winded non-answer huh

Yeah Mech, I notice that I am using more fuel than before installing the chip. I think it is just my taking advantage of the improved acceleration that causes the decrease in mileage. If I can resist the urge to enjoy the improved performance, I will try and drive more conservatively for at least one tank and let you know the results. I used to get 530 mile on a tank of gas and am now getting about 440 miles. There is also the change to 18 inch wheels with lower profile, wider tires which I am sure give me more rolling resistance and I know they weigh more than my old 16 inch wheels and tires did. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Do you do a lot of freeway driving? I get in the upper 400 miles when doing a road trip on a tank of gas, but for normal city driving I refuel usually around 380 miles or so. And thats usually when then take isn't bone dry, but been under 1/4 for a bit...

Yes Mark, I do a lot of freeway mileage (lots of open space out here in New Mexico!) and those numbers are after the low fuel light has been on a while. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

My mileage has gone down, too since installing my chip...I get about 4-5 mpg at the track.

But, it's a very big chip that I have...Yeah.

lol - i gave up thinking about mileage in a sportscar many moons ago - seems that really goes against the philosophy of a sportscar anyway - thinking about mileage (or repair cost for that matter) takes the fun out of it - besides, stopping for gas gives other people a chance to look at the car - yeah yeah - that's it

i do think about it in the jeep though - ugh - a staggering 16mpg!

I get 12 mpg in my AWD Expedition and average ~17mpg in my 968. I guess it reflects drive style.

FWIW....I have the Autothority chip and I get around 17mpg in somewhat spirited driving around town. On the highway, I've gotten as high as 25mpg or so. I used to keep an eye on the mileage, but I'm with Flash on this one.....I'd rather drive it and not worry about mileage so much.

thanks for all the info guys,

I was just checking to see if there was going to be a difference, i dont want to be going from 17/25 to 12/20, my brother's exploder gets about that and its lame to visit the gas station ever other time you get in the car , to me getting higher MPG is always a bonus

im sort of a dork about mileage, I been drooling over getting a LS2 block with displacement on demand aka cylinder deactivation

it's really all about how you drive - i average about 18 per tank, the last time i checked, but i drive mostly around town and on fun runs - the last time i checked highway mileage, it was 27 or so at an average of 75-80

I have not yet chipped my 968, but I do have chips in both my S2 and 1989 951. The difference in mileage in the S2 was barely noticeable. However, the difference in mileage in the Turbo, when driven aggresively, has been quite significant. It is a tall order to not enjoy full boost at least once in a while, let me tell you, even with today's gas prices.

yeah - turbos act completely differently with chips - they also benefit a lot more than NA motors from them - ups and downs - but isn't it a lot more fun, no matter how the mileage is affected?

side note - as much of a fan of chips as i am, i am not going to do one in the jeep - right now it will run on 87 - with a chip it will need 91 - oof - no way - makes the operating cost way wrong with the kind of mileage it gets, and the 15hp from the chip just isn't that big of a deal in that rig

choices choices choices

You are spot on. The mileage is virtually unaffected off-boost, but when on-boost, much more fuel must be used in order to keep keep the A/F ratio proper (and safe ).

Oh, Turbos are soooo much fun, and once a boost-a-holic, always a boost-a-holic, I'm afraid. One day, I want a 968 Turbo RS conversion in the stable. Shoot, while we are dreaming, how about a REAL Turbo RS in the stable. Now that's a dream of epic proportions! That would be wonderful!

Just took a 200 mile trip this weekend and drove 80 mph most of the way. (all interstate) Got 25 miles per gallon both coming and going. Before the chip change (and the 18 inch wheels and wider tires) I was getting 27 or 28 so I guess it isn't really all that bad. It sure is fun to enjoy the added power! Good luck, bob Blackwell.
