How much is too much for your dream car ?
#1

I'm curious as to what others feel would be the maximum price they would pay for their dream car, in terms of a percentage of their net worth . Mine would be 5%.

Well, if a "dream car" was to satisfy the definition, then it would be something otherwise unattainable except in a dream (pro tip - I dream about other things with a nice chassis). I would think that most of us would find something in the range of about $150K and above generally unattainable. Therefore, that would set the net worth criterion at $3M if 5% was the ratio. If $300K was to be the level than one would need a net worth of $6M to satisfy 5%.

Just a few numbers to play with.

Too much might be invading retirement principal! Of course having another bucket of spending money is fair game. I think a problem with dream cars is where do and can you drive them to enjoy their dream like qualities. Often the dream is better than the reality. Kim your dream chassis are most always better staying dreams! Those types of chassis are always too much trouble and another owners I'm tired of her s--t! Unless of course they are young, which can present other difficulties. Were we talking cars. I never know with DS?

I asked because everyone's priorities and appetite / tolerances for any given thing are so different. My secretary ( yes, that's what executive assistants were called back in the old days, lol ) owned a car which was far more expensive than mine , and far, far too expensive for her means , but she was willing to live in a crammed apartment shared with another two girlfriends, spent very little or no money on other wants, yet the car she bought was probably pushing half of her entire net worth. That was her thing, to drive the car of her dreams regardless of what sacrifices came with it. I for one, can afford a new Ferrari or a new Aston Martin but would never spend that kind of money for a car, just on principle. If I had $ 5 mil or $ 100 mil, I still would not spend more than 5% of whatever that net worth figure was on my so called dream car.

Qualifying statement : this is a hypothetical world in which 968s do not exist , so you're searching for that other perfect car you always wanted and dreamed about..

there are soooo many great "dream" cars that can be had for $50k or less it's hard to justify spending more...

hmmm - i can't think of any. as for a percentage of net worth, i'm not sure that is a fair consideration. as net worth increases, that would presume that the goal would change. for me, that isn't the case.

i can see maybe spending $200k on a car, but i think i would be hard pressed to find any value beyond that, regardless of my net worth. i could have all the money in the world, and i still don't think i would spend more on a car.

And to be clear, I'm assuming you buy the "dream" car "used" so as to off-set the crazy prices they want for new. If you start with say 2010 cars and older there's quite a few that can be had for under $50k. (i.e., 911 Turbos, Z06 Vette's, Vipers, M5 and M6's, Mustang GT's, AMG Benz's, etc.)

none of those would be "dream cars" to me. too run of the mill. maybe that's what makes it a "dream car". it has to be something currently out of reach. those are well within my reach, and frankly kind of boring to me. i've driven all of them, and none of them really wowed me.

i would be thinking more along the lines of a lamborghini muira, or a superamerica ferrari, or even a Z8, or something like that. something very limited production.

but again, i'm not sure i would buy one, even if i could. having had some really rare cars before, i was always too worried about hurting them to drive them.

that's why i think i have to limit my scope to under $200k. i think it would hurt too much if i bent anything over that.

but, everybody's dream is different.

IMO, if it's so expensive that I'm afraid to park it or drive it much it becomes more Art/Collectible than car. I agree, the cars above aren't the rarest of the rare, but for most folks those are... dream cars. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/EmoticonCar.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
