How many slate gray 968 coupes?
#1

Question for Jeff Coe-

Could you please check to see how many slate gray 968 coupes were imported into the US? I almost never see any on the forum, so I imagine it was a pretty rare color. Thanks.

Sure, 54 Q9 slate gray coupes imported to the North America. 8th most popular color with some produced in every model year.

Thanks! Just one question - is Q9 the color code for slate gray? According to Wikipedia, a total of 2417 coupes were exported to the US, so just 2.2% were slate gray.

Never mind the USA, in the UK I know of only three examples. One's a cab, another is a coupe featured in March 2009 edition of 911&Porsche. And then there is my one and only (I hope!), Sport. There were only 306 Sport's made in 94/95(hope that figure is correct, I'm sure some anorak will correct me if not!)and I love the colour. The cloth seats are great as well, don't understand why their not so well received in the magazines. I note that a lot of USA owners modify their cars, which is fine below the body work but adding ducts to the bonnet etc is sacrelige as far as I'm concerned. But each to their own. It's what winds your watch that's important.

There is lots of misinformation out there. The one thing you have to note is my production figures are Porsche data that I have collected and reflects North American production (US and Canada), not imported or sales. So a car may have been built to US specs but never left Germany or one could have been shipped and damaged or a lemon.

For North American 968 coupes I have 2,234 and for cabs I have 2,008.

Q9 is the sales code for slate gray. L22D is the paint code.

Normally, I would agree with you. But on a color as conservative as slate gray, I think the naca ducts spice things up just enough to make it interesting. That and the red calipers on my car go well with the color, imha. Plus I like the fact that they're duplicates of what the Porsche factory installed on the turbo's. I'm not sure I'd be as excited with them on a Guards Red car, though...

Car looks good Cloud. These cars are by and large drivers. I suppose that some day a very low mileage example might fetch its original list price, but I don't figure I'll be around to see that. So mod 'em, race 'em, wax 'em - whatever. Just enjoy them. I'm happy that there are enough of us with passion to debate ducts <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

FWIW I really like the slate grey. Very classy color. Looks great in both coupe and cab. I'd like to see the cab with teh classic grey top.

I know its not about keeeping values up by not touching the original bodywork, it looks great as is, regardless of there being Nace ducts on a turbo version. Its about not spoiling the bonnet lines for me. Even love the quirky looking pop up headlights, definitely wouldn't change them. But yes Cloud's car is nice, Slate Grey Metallic rules!

Doh! Just seen another Grey Sport on Pistonheads. Sigh, there's more than one then. Might have known, its too good a colour to be unpopular. Boohoo. Anybody got some spray paint, I'll spray go faster stripes on it! That'll be one less again!
