How many 968s are out there
#1

Has anyone done a survey to see approximately how many coupes and cabs remain alive in the world?

I don't see how that would be possible . One can only theorize, using some anecdotal information and then apply a formula with several factors and variable built in - heck, an algorithm just to come up with an educated guess, but that guess could still be way off the actual numbers of 968s still out there. ( not the minimum lol, but the maximum )

In the UK you can check using the DVLA's site 'howmanyleft.co.uk' it the data isn't 100 % but it makes for interesting reading......

I read an article that said 70 percent of Porsches sold are still running. Seems high for the 968's!

agreed. based on what i can gather, it's optimistic that 50% of the north american cars are still out there.

Do all members of this Forum own 968's and is that reflected in the membership number?

the membership number reflects past and present. many cars have changed hands. many members are no longer active. a number of members do not have cars. we have the largest group by a long shot, but it still falls short.

Falls short of the actual number of 968's out there? I've certainly met some 968 owners at the track who are not Forum members for a variety of reasons. Does Jeff have a number or is that also merely a reflection of those he has registered ?

Can we set up a survey similar to what Flash did for the Exhaust Mod? the survey could address things such as:

1- Type usage (Track, Road or Both)

2- Body style (Coupe or Cab)

3- Transmission (Manual or Tip)

4- Current mileage (Miles per year), year etc etc.

5- Modification (Stereo, Interior trim, Suspension, Propulsion (oops my discipline is coming out) Drive train, etc)

6- Estimated miles/yr

7- Estimated value

possibly other metrics as the Forum sees fit. For example: I have a 95 Cab Tip that I use as a daily driver. I estimate I will put 6-8K miles on the car/yr and currently have $30K USD invested in this beast . I have modified the interior trim with leather and Alcantera and upgraded the Stereo with a touchscreen, Bluetooth and Satellite radio.

I would go as far as to argue that most 968 owners are not Forums ( any forums ..) members.. So there could be a hell of a lot of 968s in operation of which we know nothing about and can never find out.. My five or six houses down the street neighbor has had four, still has one and has absolutely no interest in participating or even lurking at car forums. Tough to say whether he's the exception, or the norm. ( I don't mean in terms of number of 968s owned, lol ..I meant as in a 968 owner clueless about, or disinterested in forums )

IF WE HAD THE MAP WHICH USED TO SHOW THE TEAR DROP LOCATIONS OF OWNERS AND THIER INFORMATION I FEEL THAT WOULD BE A GREAT START TO FIND OUT THE ANSWER. IN ADDITION I FOULD IT HELPFULL TO FIND 968 OWNERS THAT LIVE NEAR ME AS THERE ARE NOT SO MANY LOCATED IN OR NEAR OREGON. BUT AS IN ALL THINGS WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR FLASH TO DECIDE TO DO THIS UPDATE ON THE MAP

Wouldn't it be easier for one of you technological marvels to hack into the state mvd's or insurance companies and come up with the number? Ds most of the people I meet at DE's with 968's aren't members

Interesting idea but I wouldn't want information about me or my car on a map available to everyone.

william - you have an email

JTP - the only info we would put there is what is already in your profile (shown at the left). it would only be available to members, who are screened at the time of application. non-members can't see any of that. we don't want anything critical floating about either.

JTP considering how much info is out there about us this and how easy it is to access it, this should be the least of your worries!

What's with the CAPS?

Lol, I like RAP's idea, though let me make it clear I would in no way condone an illegal or even unethical act, but it's a novel way of thinking toward an " unconventional ". solution.. Ha, very creative :-) :-)

You're right, there's a whole lot of info about us all out there already but we all must try to limit what's out there as much as possible.

Agreed. Unfortunately we leave footprints almost everywhere we go that can be traced. I do no online banking or bill paying for this reason although I'm probably deluding myself in thinking this makes any difference. I still use cash to a great degree but obviously in many instances it's not possible. Travel for example precludes much of the usage of cash.

Facebook has no appeal to me and strikes me as a Faustian bargain at best.

if there is no information such as address, name, phone number, etc, there is really nothing anybody could do. merely having your city, car, options, mods, or anything like that, would provide nothing useful to anybody. we don't store, or even request anything personal, and in fact we discourage posting such things. i don't even like to see phone numbers up here.
