How is 968forums.com doing so far?
#21

I can see that this forum is way more advanced than 968.net in terms of technology, and therefore it is a good thing. I think you guys expect too much too soon. The forum at 968uk (mentioned above - whats so funny about "our" language? ) was really quiet for quite a long time, but then suddenly took off - partly as a reaction to the bickering elsewhere maybe, but mainly because the 968 community in the UK had no "home" of its own - and it was a more advanced forum too. People will find this place in their own time and will prefer it simply because it has better features. I will continue to lurk occasionally on all these forums as there are always useful threads to read everywhere. And besides, I like and dislike you all equally!

All the best!

Thanks for the intro to the technological benefits of 968forums, Eric. I'll start exploring more intensively. Thanks, also, to Etnier.

I would like to see the other site updated more offten, but I like the discussion better. I think the 968net has more meat to the discussions, but with all the buttons and bells this site should continue to grow in members and discussion topics. I'll continue to use and support both.

as more people use it, more and diverse points of view will be entered and conswquently the meat you speak of, will be found here - that is what made that site so cool, and it is unfortunate that ray opted to ignore it - it certainly would have been better if he just brought it up to date, but, as eric has said, it would have required a complete retrofit

change will happen - the wheels of progress are slow - who still has a black and white TV? who doesn't have a computer? those things are huge in our lives, and took decades to make everyday items - this is a much less important thing in most people's lives - it will take time

Big L... Ibelieve you are 100% correct. The addition of Moderators on this forum WILL make all of the difference. I'm sure IF any of the same type of "bickering" begins it will hopefully be delt with directly and swiftly, the absense of any control is what will bring down the other site as people will become weary of trying to follow a thread and just watch it go off on a tangent or off the deep end as many have. Happy Porshun!

Rustech... That would be a GREAT idea, maybe trying to contact the seller before it closes or sells and ask them to pass on the address of the site. I think a new owner would appreciate it if they were not already aware.

ds 968... The best thing to do is not get caught up in any of that 'political, personality, ours vs their's' BS. even if remarks are target to you (or anyone) just don't respond. Once you let someone get under your skin it gives them a perceived power over you, it's kind of like road rage, it is best to just let them go and not help escalate an issue... it isn't worth it!

I do like the technical section at 968UK. The specific areas of interest is a nice touch.

The advantages of 968forums.com are obvious but technical. That's not a complaint, as the site is really very cool.

968.net still has a very positive element. It's the people who continue to post there. IMHO the real value of any forum is just that, the people who participate and with whom you interact.

I'll continue to visit both sites actively because there are people on both sites with whom I wish to communicate. There are contributors on both sites whose input I value. If or when the overwhelming majority of folks make the shift, I'll go with 968forums.com exclusively.

I obviously can't speak for everyone at ".net" but IMO some of the negativity [aka downward spiral] may have come from the tenacious efforts in advertising for this site and some snide remarks made by a few 968forum members. It was obviously rubbing

many the wrong way and yet it continued.

Many posts to different topics where much like a harrassing commercial. A good example of this was mentioned earlier - a new member/owner asked a question and instead of straight answer he was told to come here. IMO that's just not a cool thing to do. That's why the term "trawling" came up. Help the guy out first and then suggest this new site. There's still several knowledgeable members at .net that can provide a wealth of information. In fact I'd would probably suggest .net first because of history of topics. In time this site will grow and probably take the lead. In the mean time I'm sure the majority of members at .net are aware of this site, so perhaps some should fore go the blatant ads and allow natural progression to take place...

I am not about to moderate your opinion (BTW I don't moderate threads unless it is out of control I want to leave that up to the moderators) because I want to keep this an "Open minded forum" However if it creates havoc the moderators will step in. I think what happened is a few members wanted to get everyone to switch over in excitement for the new forum. I never asked anyone to help me get this site started. My intention was genuine, create a new moderated environment so that everyone can make peace.... with fresh start. Plus meet the growing demand for an updated 968 forum. It has never been about the money (All funds to operate the forum has come out of my pocket)or fame, like many things I have done over the years I just wanted to give back to the community. Well there are some people that want to hold grudges and created controversy that was expected. I think that we are past the urge to fight and bicker (at least I hope this is the case) The flame threads have died down on .net so I think we should leave this topic alone here. The attendance in the last week has spiked and I think those who want to participate are happy. Posts like this will only cause more drama. So I would appreciate it if everyone just sticks to talking about cars rather then who's side you are on or which site you would recommend. I agree with you people will form an opinion and pick the site or both sites to participate. My agenda is to keep the peace, make sure this forum runs smoothly, and ad updates/features as my time permits. We have several moderators in place and as the attendance grows I will put the other volunteers in place. One more point I do not care if you point someone to a topic on any other forum as long as it is on topic and/or will assist the person. As I would imagine any other forum would allow the same feeling. Every forum I participate on has threads and threads of comments pointing to other forums. This is not a new thing.

So for now please don't make posts that can lead to further arguments.

Thanks,

Eric

I have to say I agree with S Cal968.....don't think his post was meant malicious.

Just think that it is not netiquette to put post like "968.net is going down really fast" or to try to drag people from there to here or any other forum.

For my part I have profited from 968.net a lot, still plan to go there and I think both sites can coexist. May people decide themselves where to go....

Exactly. Based on content and community. The intent is to lure participation by showing value.

Quote:it is not netiquette to put post like "968.net is going down really fast"

For the record - the post on 968.net this quote refers to was started, not by a 968Forum advocate attacking the site, but by a 968.net user who was drawing attention to the growing problem of inter-968 site sniping.

I don't think anyone has started a thread on 968.net designed specifically to criticize that site (I may have missed one if it exists). Some replies to posts have been critical of the site and some posts have pointed here - whether that is improper or not is up to the individual reader to decide.

I currently use both sites and place a great deal of value on the knowledge and friendships I have gained from 968.net over the past year. That site educated me about the model, helped me find and inspect a car, and helped me keep it on the road once I bought it.

The criticisms of 968.net are, however, fairly serious:

1. The site is never updated (particularly the non-forum portions like Classifieds and Events) or modernized

2. It lacks dedicated moderators (which might stop some of the "sniping" and needless interpersonal battles the site has experienced)

3. And most disturbingly, in the absence of a governing/stabilizing/responding owner/moderator, 968.net could potentially disappear tomorrow without explanation

If those problems did not exist this new site would not be necessary. If you look at Rennlist, for example, John D. has tirelessly updated the site on a regular basis. That forum is far more modern and usable than it was when I first joined it five years ago.

I hope that in time the entire 968 community can migrate here for reasons of both practicality and stability. But individuals will make thier own choices and I respect that. However, if the only reason to stay at 968.net is some sort of "site loyalty" then I find that a bit odd, as a site is really the users, not the interface and server.

Eric,

My post wasn't meant to blame anyone or stir up anything, I was merely responding to an earlier post. And, there's no reason for you to take offense, you obviously don't have control of what others do.

If you just want car talk, then perhaps you shouldn't allow topics like this one. I was just relating the impression I had. I purposely didn't use any names because it was *not* meant as a vindictive post.
the other site is really going downhill fast - there are a couple of people who are desperately trying to keep that site going, in spite of the fact that it has been ignored for so long and lacks the features we have here, but sooner or later it will happen

i am thinking of sending an email to everyone over there - many just haven't learned about it yet

Note that I said "started a thread," and "on 968.net."

personally, i think that thread was started primarily as a shot at me

pete - any referrels to this site are purely becaue we are better able to answer questions here, if only because we can include pics in the thread easily - i chose to answer his question over here, because it's a better site and therefore a better place to answer it - we constantly refer people to other sites for answers - i see no problem with doing the same to here - as for netiquite, clearly there is no such thing being observed over there - if there were, this site would never have been created

i have no fear that most people will end up over here - that thread is exactly why
Seems to be stalling to me, less posts every day. I could be wrong.

What can we do, without deliberately poaching off of 968.net, to relocate the 968 community here?

Perhaps I am being impatient - this take much longer than I assumed.

[post="1365"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
Well, I must say that after watching this site for a week or so and searching the net for 968 data, this site certainly gained and has retained my attention. I am completely convinced that the site far surpasses that of 968net and the data provided by each of the members is very factual and accurate. Nice attention to detail and I appreciate the way the responses are written. Keep it up folks. I hope to be able to contribute to all.
