to speed or not to speed
#21

that's why i love my new radar detector - it tells me about those before i get to them

covers are not legal here in ca - got a ticket for having one a number of years back

the spray stuff does work to some degree, though not nearly as well as they pitch it - the one drawback is that it makes the plate a better target for lasers

i think i'll take the $10 fixit ticket for no front plate

or plate covers<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I ordered that spray a couple of months ago, applied it to all my plates but no idea if it works though... I mean, how would one know ?!
...think about that for a second...

As for this weekend .. I wussied out and did not speed in that particular area ( not that I would have considered it without calling that dude ahead of time ) , but a few hours further down the road there were some opportunities to step on it a bit so I did have some fun after all, however, certainly not the same as it might have been having a decent number of miles at my disposal to do so ..

Side story though, just as I reached the L.A. county line, there was this guy in a Ferrari 430 ( still had the dealer paper plates on it ) crusing at around 90 mph, with a blonde "barbie" in the passenger seat . So I wanted to get a closer look at both the car and her, and came up next to him maybe just over 100mph ..at which point this dufus probably thinks I'm trying to race him , so he DOWNSHIFTS and steps on it catapulting that car out of there so fast it was like I had just shifted mine in reverse . Wow, he must have really wanted to impress his girlfriend, by outrunning a 4 cylinder The stupidly funny part to me was the downshifting though.. WTF could he have possibly been thinking ; that 500 hp is not enough in 6th gear to still massacre a silly 968, without the least bit of effort ?

i am serious, i did buy it in spite of my better judgment which usually keeps me from purchasing stuff that sounds
"too good to be true" , but thought I'd give this the benefit of the doubt ..

I'm not the type to go running lights but I've gotten 3 redlight cam tickets and my wife has 2. Some of those lights seem to rigged with a shortened yellow light cycle.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Oh they are revenue machines no doubt. Red light cameras never bothered me but statistics show in Virginia that they shorten the cycles and of course 90+ percent of intersections that have the cameras have a higher accident rate.
NBC4 in DC did the testing on the plate stuff, video is still probably on their website somewhere

There is always a flash when the camera goes off so if you do not get a ticket after seeing the flash you would know.

I was wrong it was abc7

Ah, I knew there had to be a way to test that ( well, not deliberately testing it.. ) but I am personallymore concerned about speed cameras starting to be installed on streets and highways than I am with red light cameras, as I don't even come close to going trough a yellow.. overly cautious there

It would be interesting to do a comparison between the PhantomPlate and off-the-shelf products such as Krylon clear gloss.

FYI, just for fun I requested dealer information from this PhantomPlate (using a motorcycle dealer name that belongs to me) and received wholesale pricing:

100 cans - $9.99/can

No wonder so many radar sites are peddling the stuff at a $20 profit per can.

Flash, wanna become a dealer?

One town here the red light camera would go off if you came to a stop and your bumper was over the white line. Stupid speed cameras flash too so you'll know if you trip one.

I'm not sure I can even find the words .. and contesting the idiocy of that petty, lame, b.s. with the local courts would probably do nothing but take up your time

I have only a German replica plate in front, so tracing my car's photo to the owner might not be that easy, unless they take a photo of the rear...

Haven't they invented the 'infra-red-camera's' yet <i>- on the other side of this planet </i>

Not sure how well the infrared would work on the plates? Also guess they want the color of the car and as much detail as they can get. Some local high school students got the smart idea to print fake plates matching the teacher's cars they did not like and purposely run through the cameras. that would be a felony in most states - the same as using somebody else's tags

the red light cameras here have shown a dramatic reduction in accidents in intersections - they have also shown to be a big help in urban traffic - however, they have shown an increase in speeding tickets at those intersections, as people are trying to beat the light

never ceases to amaze me at how dumb some people can be

dan - go out and take a pic using the flash on your camera - take one of a plate with no paint, and one with - same lighting and positioning (like side by side) - it would be interesting to see what difference there is

Not in every study I have seen in the state of Virginia which is the only studies I have seen. Significant (double digit percentage increases) in all those studies.

Needs to be at the right angle for the picture but watch the video above from one of our local news stations and you can see the results

d'oh .. should have thought of that before I sprayed all the plates..yes, on all the cars ( just in case my wife or son decide to beat a yellow light one day..)

funny, when I called them to place the order, the sales rep said " we are required to inform you that the product may be illegal to use in your state " I replied : " so is speeding...what was your point again.. ?! " She just chuckled and processed the order.

LOL probably should have watched it myself before posting the link. I saw it was on of my local stations and assumed (bad move I know) it was the original story I saw a few years back.
