Hitch Receiver
#1

OK - do not "crucify" me for asking - has anyone ever installed a hitch receiver on a 968?
Wait... let me finish before you think I'm CRAZY!
I was pondering (that's it so far) the thought of being able to transport two bicycles on a bike rack that would insert in a hitch receiver. My 22 year old son (who owns an ACURA NSX) told me he would "disown" me if I add a hitch receiver to the 968. The local Hitch shop could not find a hitch receiver that is 968 specific, but he did find some that work on a 944.
SUSPENSION QUESTION: would added weight at the rear affect the sport suspension on the 968? I have a feeling that it probably would NOT be a good idea... but I look forward to some good feed back on this matter. I hope that some of you are still willing to communicate with me, even though they feel I may be "off my rocker" with this "crazy" thought.

it has been done -a detailed search here should show it (ALWAYS use "more search options")

In that case, you don't need me to tell you that I have a "hitch" on my 968 that holds a bike rack that carries two bikes. The only drawback is that the rack has a strap that hooks over the leading edge of the trunk, and there's enough movement so that the tension adjuster taps the trunk lid, thereby removing a little paint. To me, a small price to pay - to others, unacceptable. There are ways to resolve this, but it's not that important to me.

go grab a couple of those sheepskin seat belt cover thingies and put it on your strap - that should stop that whapping paint removal

Flash, it's past the point of protecting the trunk lid. I'll worry about it after the next paint job (or touch-up).

Langley, I'll have to dig through my records to find the specifics on the hitch/rack - it'll take me a few days. As for photos, I'll shoot one of the hitch - and then sometime later, I'll put the rack on and shoot that.

I just did a web search and found http://www.1aauto.com/1A/bike-rack/Porsche/968. The advantage to the unit I have is that it came with the receiver, which came welded to a vertical plate that goes behind the rear license plate and bolts through there to the rearmost horizontal chassis element. I did not have to do any engineering or construction work.

With apologies for the delay, here are photos of the "receiver" mounted on my 968. At some point, photos of the rack itself will be added.

Here's a link I just found to a site selling this rack.

Would this work to tow a small trailer with some track wheels and a jack?

I'd guess that it would. However, if I were doing it, I'd make sure to have a means of attaching safety chains, and I'd probably add some reinforcement to the receiver "box" - as well as improving the way in which the "tongue" would be held in the receiver. You'd could probably use the bottom part of the bike rack as the starting point for fabricating the tongue, and then weld that to the actual trailer. All in all, probably doable, but you'll never know what kind of load is safe - until you tow, and find out "real time".
