Higher Connections "Robby" Cables Survey
#1

I have been having extensive conversations and email exchanges with Robby regarding the alternator to starter cable assembly and what it should be for the 968. The basis for the original Higher Connections cables seems to have been for the 944 / 951 for obvious reasons. There are differences between our cars and the 944/951. Robby is trying very hard to work out those differences so that what he makes up for the 968 is right.

One of the "improvements" that Dan of IceShark, who started this whole thing, made is the addition of an inline fuse to the large gauge wire that goes from the starter to the alternator. The only reason I can think of to do this would be a failed voltage regulator on the alternator putting too much voltage back to the battery. Does that ever happen???

If it does, this fuse might be a good idea. If it doesn't, the fuse poses some problems as I see the installation in the 968. The fuse adds diameter and some rigidity to the cable. In the standard Higher Connections cable this fuse is located right at the starter. I do not see how with this fuse we can use the routing that Porsche uses for the cables at the starter. Frankly I would not like that. Also Porsche did not think a fuse is required. Should the fuse fail it would be a royal pain to change. And finally, the fuse adds to the cost of the cable.

Robby wants to do a 968 specific cable. He wants to supply what the market wants. So will those of you who are likely to purchase this cable from Robby please post here what your preference is: fuse or no fuse.

I got the fuse with the kit, but didn't use it. I did use the other fuse on the battery side though, so battery to starter. I think the point being is if something happened to that cable and it shorted it would just blow the fuse. Like today with our old wires and the issues we are seeing with them.

I got the set with the fuse, and left it in place. While it's a bit rigid as you say, it didn't present a problem during installation.
