My name is Cap Smith, and I live in Fort Collins, Colorado.
I don't own a 968 now, nor have I ever owned one.
I joined the forum because I might want to buy a 968. I am specifically interested in this car because it has a lot of legroom. Is that odd? Well, for tall people like me, finding cars with enough legroom is difficult. My current car is a 2014 BMW 535 X-drive diesel. It is a nice car: great brakes, really awesome engine that gets wonderful economy while also providing serious thrust, typical excellent BMW suspension. But it is hard to get in and out, and I am done with it.
One of the best cars I ever owned was a 1992 Acura Legend LS Coupe. Quiet, luxurious, reliable, competent. And I think: beautiful. That car had lots of legroom, and the coupe doors were huge so that I could get in and out easier. Unfortunately, most examples of that model now have really high mileage, so I am not interested in finding another at this point.
Current cars with large legroom include: Toyota Highlander and Hyundai Genesis. Well, then. Just sayin'. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
I remember sitting in a 944 Turbo many years ago and thinking, "Hey, this car fits me!" Alas, at the time, I could not afford the insurance, much less the car itself.
So, here I am, looking for a car that fits, and I discovered that used 968's are still available with relatively low mileage. I have done some homework, reading about the typical maintenance issues, the fuel economy, the costs of ownership.
I suppose one thing I wonder about still is, "Does the tiptronic transmission have any special problems?" I am really looking for a classic GT -- a car that can carry 2 people in comfort on long trips. I read about replacing the clutch, and wonder if the tiptronic might be a better choice for a 20-year-old car.
I hope to hear from those of you with experience with 968's.
Cheers, Cap
