Anybody else out there in a colder clime have to "warm up" the horn before it will function? I have to hold a button (doesn't matter which) down for about 20-30 seconds before it will sound. Works fine when the temp is above 60 or so. Could be worse... Just curious.

Germany's year-long tropical climate does not lend itself to manufacture of cars which function well in cold weather.  That's my guess.     :closedeyes:

 

Having said that, this is definitely something new ( and strange ).    I'm surprised my tiptronic 968 has not exhibited this symptom ( YET..) , it's probably the only thing that still works in that car.,.

Only trash-talking one of the two cars, the other is great ! So just as is the case with old age , if 50 % of things work well, that's good enough, and you get to complain about the other 50 % .

When I close the driver's side window all the way, the radio goes off. If I open it even a 1/4", the radio comes back on. Close it all the way, the radio goes off again!

Your antenna wire runs alongside the top of the driver's window and you're strangling it  to the point of cutting off the signal when you close the window ?     Just kidding of course, but holy crap, that is about as weird as it gets ..even with our gremlin-infested cars.. ,

Sounds like you need to clean all of your grounds...or, your radio fluid level is low.

Bill, I have to give credit where credit is due, and that window-radio connection is a good one. At a physical level, I wonder if there is a wire that is failing or putting the radio into a fault mode when the door flexes because of the window being at the limits of its travel.

 

But, like I have said before, the quirky problems my 92 cab had went away when I replaced the ignition switch, so maybe that should be part of your game plan. My heat would go on at random times, and my interior lights would work whenever they felt like it. The car was too young for menopause, so I figured there must be another problem, and I settled on changing out the ignition switch based on how the switch behaved when I was starting the car.

 

Problem(s) solved.

Bill, I know the coupes are so well sealed that if there isn't space for new notes to come into the car the radio won't let any more in.  But I didn't know the cabs were sealed so well.

I recently had the window express removed and the great-mysterious-two-years-of-the-car-unlocking-itself-problem finally fixed, which included again going into the door. When it happens, the radio itself actually remains on, just the sound cuts out. I suspect there is something going on with the speaker wiring in the door along with a grounding issue. The radio sound often comes on 5-10 seconds after turning on the radio. And the window express always seemed to have grounding issues.


And yes, I often sing along. Of course I also sing lead in a couple of bands and often use driving time to learn new songs. So if you happen to pull up next to me, I promise it won't be too painful!
