Help me pick!
#1

Ok guys, need some help here. I am in need of new tires, now, not later. So here are my options:

1) New tires for my 16" stock wheels $500-600

2) BBS Sport Classic 7&8.5x17" ET55/50 $600 with tires (50% life left)

3) Turbo Look 1 (twists, non hollow) with tires: $600

60-70% tread life left

BF Goodrich 265/35/18 93Y G-Force T/A10X18 ET 65

BF Goodrich 225/40/18 92Y 8.5X18 ET 52

so there it is. Obvious pros/cons, Twists heavy but I do like look, BBS hard to clean and smaller width than I want but I do like look. New tires, well kind of a waste as I will be buying wheels in near future.

New tires. Just got from Tire Rack a set of Yokohama S drive for 450 shipped. I paid $50 for installation and balancing.

Really? both of you would stick with the 16" wheels and just get new tires? I was really leaning towards option 1 or 2.

Pics would help a bit.

I had the 16s on my car and couldn't wait to trade them out for 17's or 18's. I ended up with 17 twists off a boxter. Love the look, and got to stay with OEM wheels.

For the options above, it would be a decision between the 17 BBS rims or the 18's (assuming those are OEM Porsche twists). I'd lean towards the 18's if they are OEM, if they are not, then I'd go with the 17" BBS as it's great manufacturer, and the 17s are a nice balace between look and ride comfort.

Nothing wrong with 16's (lived with them on my current 968 for about a year till I used up the tires), but looks like a lot of tire around a small rim. For me the inch or two difference in diameter of teh 17's or 18's really improves the aesthetics. You can easily sell your 16's, plenty of 944 owners that will take them as an upgrade from the cookie cutters.

The 18's are Mille Miglia C3 Twists about 28.5lbs for the rear. Leaning towards these for lots of reasons but the weight is killing me.

The Sport Classics much lighter but well, its a size thing.

Personally I would run from any wheel that weighed 28.5 lbs. That's an extra 40lbs of unsprung weight, gonna need a supercharger to turn those

I know all of the reasons to not go with the 18" turbo's. I run them and the look outweights everything else.

If you need tires now, just make sure whatever wheels you get are direct fit - waiting for spacers and longer wheel studs can take weeks or months. I like the 17" look a lot, and I'd love 18's but I don't want to take a chance with my spindles and other suspension bits.

BTW, you'll *hate* cleaning the BBS wheels after a while.

Turbo twist always look nice on these cars but I stay away from used tires. Someone else has already had them for a part of their useful life and they are on their way to getting hard and cracking. Can you tell when they were manufactured?

But i agree on the used tires comment. I paid $800 for my Twists and they came with used tires that looked almost new (about %75) The problem was age. There was some cracking and after driving on them it became more apparent. Its not my daily so parking it until I could buy new tires wasn't an issue.

yeah - toss the tires - tire wear patterns are set by the car and its setup.. they will never feel quite right until you wear them down and reset the pattern. none of those tires have a whole lot of meat left to really allow for that. age is almost always a problem too.

as for the wheels, i would be very careful about the weights. heavy wheels end up needing upgraded suspensions to handle them. that can be a slippery slope, especially if budget is an issue.

i would either keep looking, or just put new tires on the 16s

Ok so I currently have 225/50R16, if I by new tires would anyone change to alt sizes? Stagger?

I have read every post in the "wheels" section, 2-3 times trying to figure this out. However not much info for 16" tires other than 245/45 for rear. I have seen the 205/50 front and 225/50 rear as well. Is there any real advantage to changing sizes at all that would even be noticeable?

BTW, the 18" Twist tires/wheels are 2yrs old and still have little rubber fuzzys, guy just bought new set up for his car

There's lots of "it depends" in the responses you'll get to those questions. I had to research this for six months, reading lots of posts here and on other forums, TireRack.com, etc. to figure it all out and I'm not done *yet*.

My general sense from your question re: tire sizes is you're talking about width, because you don't want to change the overall circumference of the tire if you can avoid it. My final conclusion was that our cars were designed for the tires of the early '90's, which were not as sticky, so if you increase wheel diameter, and tire stickiness, and also width, you've got three factors increasing the load on your spindles and other suspension bits.

In the end, I did all three - I went from 16's to 17's, I increased the width of the wheel (still not beyond wheels available originally, though) and I put new sticky tires on. My reasoning was that I don't track my car, and my chances to drive spiritedly are limited.

Correct, I'm trying to keep circumference at 25"

Shopping new tires Im getting prices $550 and up installed.

I really want a set of the Victor wheels ($1400) in the future but till then..,,.

Was really leaning towards the twists because tires great shape, like wheels, can sell my 16"s to offset cost and the sell twists in future.

Reservation of course is weight drag and hard on the car.

the other thing i don't like about the twists is that they are all twisted in the same direction, and when on the car, 2 look backwards

I would opt for the lightest wheel. I installed Bridgestone SO-4 Pole Positions on the car this past spring and I can say that after 4,000 mile that they were a good choice.

For me...

I like the BBS Sport Classics too but unless you have some one else clean your rims or put very little miles on your 968 I would pass. After going through 3 generations of VWs and BMWs with some version of BBS lattice wheels i wouldn't do it again because of what a bitch they were to clean.

If the tires were new on the Twists, I would go with them (albeit I am biased because that is what is on my car.) I would worry more about tire age than percentage of wear. I would rather buy a set of one year old tires with 20% wear than a set of seven year old tires with 5% wear.

If that is not the case get new tires for your current wheels.

Funny you say that...I always had an issue with the teardrop rims on A2 Jetta GLI for the same reason...but at the same time I was working as a race mechanic for a GT40 MKIV and the turbine spokes on one side were going the wrong way on one side as well. The interesting thing is all three are going the right way on the driver side. I guess that is is all that really matters...the driver sees it the right way and everyone else just sees the blur of the spokes as they get passed

Will be doing the twists.

I will be selling my chrome 16's to off set cost

In 6months to a year I'll sell the twist for Victors.

This solves several issues, mostly that I don't want to spend money on new tires for short term use. Plus I can try out 18's before commiting to them over 17's
