Kiwi '94 968 6 spd with a twist
#1

Hi all,

I'm buying my friends '94 968 6spd. It's a LHD Japanese import, non-M030, no LSD and has approx 68,000km. I currently have a NZ New '86 944 n/a with approx 125,000km. I've been active on pelican, RL and 924board for several years and I lurk at a few more.

It's a beautiful car, it feels tight and responsive but there's one problem. Because it was imported into New Zealand and it is a '94 it doesn't meet our frontal impact legislation and it can't be registered for normal road use. It also doesn't met criteria to be eligible for a Special Interest Vehicle (SIV) because the 968 was available new in NZ as a RHD in '94. It's a real shame because even a donor 968 here is a rare and expensive beast.

There's not much choice for this car, the reason why I've bought it is for parts. I intend to keep the 968 drivetrain for my 944. Over simplifing this, I'm lifting the bodies from both the 968 and 944, converting the 968 to right hand drive and then lowering the 944 body onto it in the same fashion the cars were assembled in the factory.

Has anyone converted a LHD 968 before? When I have the hours to spend trawling through PET I'll try to compare part numbers for the RHD conversion, concentrating on the mechanical side of things- engine, clutch/ brake hydraulics, power steering assembly. Is there anything else? Engine loom, etc? Are there S2 parts I could use? Is there anything they can think of that might surprise me?

Right now i'm going to concentrate on the mechanical side of things- engine, clutch/ brake hydraulics, power steering assembly. Is there anything else? Engine loom, etc?

While doing this conversion I'll be doing much of the preventative maintenance typical when buying a new 16v powered S2/968.

Here are the pics as my friend bought it:

My 944:

Heres the two cars together. Here the 968 has plates only so I could take it out and testdrive it.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Good grief, mate. Why bother? Seems to me you are buying into a huge undertaking with great uncertainty for success. My '94 968 cab is street legal in the U.S.A. and a true pleasure. If you get your conversion done you'll have a hell of a car, but you're sure biting off a pretty big chunk. Best of luck, patience, and time.

the only options for the car is to part it, sell it overseas or turn it into the racecar and we decided on the former. Definitely not for the faint of heart!
