Hello from Oakland, Ca with 1993 968 cab
#1

Hello, my name is John, living in oakland, ca. I am a longtime car guy (42yo) mostly 80's bmers and 70s datsuns, but always loved the front engined porsche's. Well I saw an ad on craiglist "1993 porsche 968 for 10k" with no pic. So since it was a few blocks from my home, l went and looked at it even though i didnt have 10k. It was at a body shop, where it had been abandoned, a 1993 968 cab with tiptronic. out of reg since 2006.

Because it is what i tend to do, I bought it for 5k and drove it home. Its now a few months later and I have paid the reg up to date, converted it to 5 speed with a tranny out of an s2, put in koni sport shocks, did full motor tune, 17" staggered boxster wheels, rsbarn chip and k&n. Its still a little rough cosmetically, but presents well from 5 yards. oh and i had to fix the power top, what a pia!!!

Next is cosmetics. I want to do that homemade rs style front end like on the RL.

Ill have to say: this is a great effin car!!!!! reallt really really a great car. cant believe these wern't more popular????? anyways, there ya go.

There are a number of us located in the immediate Bay Area. You'll have to join us on an outing when the next one comes up.

Welcome!

Good to hear that you brought a 968 "back to life"!

Your reaction <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/excl.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> to how it handles and feels has made it well worth the effort. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/clap.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

How hard was it to convert to a manual? Why a 5 speed and not the 6?

Oh....Welcome. good to have another owner willing to move outside of the box

Id love to take full credit for the 5 speed conversion, but my roomates friend races 944's and knew it. you just need all the pieces from a manual: transaxle, tranny,. pedals, clutch components, then its pretty straight forward, but obviously a large job. The 5 speed was due to the hard-to-find-edness and expense of the 6 speed. I bought my s2 5 speed tranny in good shape for $300---cant beat that. The reason to specifically use the 5 speed from an s2 is the lower gear ratio in that tranny as opposed to other 944 trannys. the 951 trannys are too tall. The rsbarn dude has a 968 with an s2 tranny even---hope that helps--

John:

Congrats on your 968! I'm another Bay Area member - Alameda. If you haven't done it already, you might want to consider doing the airbox mod. Probably the best bang for the buck mod there is on these cars.

Just how many of us Bay Area denizens are there? We should really get together for a Sunday drive/lunch.
