New 968 owner
#1

Hi all,

My name is Tim Betteridge and I live in the Northeast suburbs of Atlanta. I have been a long time 944 owner, having owned 4 in the past (3 8V and 1 S2), one of which I still have and campaign as an ITS car in SCCA. I was a PCA member for many years although that has now lapsed. I used to race in PCA club racing but gave that up for SCCA.

After many years of waiting I finally raised the cash for a 968. This is a 1994 black coupe with tan interior. It has it's original M030 suspension, LSD, and the fancy sound system. The car had a hair under 74,000 miles when I bought it in the Detroit area and drove it all the way home in a 13-hour dash. I can't say much for the sound system since it was inoperable when I bought the car - the amp under the passenger seat was fried so I bypassed it. I spent 13 hours just listening to the motor!

I'm now in the 2nd month of ownership. I have already diagnosed and repaired a few minor issues. Just need to work on some small rattles and then I have some other small problems, but basically it's a really solid car. I'm looking forward to the next autocross - this car is definitely the goods for that kind of activity.

Welcome,

The M030 is pretty rare, about 100 imported to North America.

Enjoy the site,

Jay

Welcome to the Forum Tim. I changed out my sound system in the spring and have the amp that was under the passenger seat sitting around. I think it was working OK before I removed it. If you need me to send it to you just let me know.

Welcome, sounds like you got lucky with the M030, they are pretty rare. When were the belts changed last? There is a lot on here about the belt issues. Similar to 944 issues but with some important differences.

Good call, I posted a while back an alternator cable from Summit Racing that worked great and was long enough to route away from the heat sources that cooked the old one.

Jim - I tried to figure out how to PM you about the radio but could not (permissions...). Anyway when I figure it out I'll get back to you - still undecided whether to go with a new radio (i.e. w/USB) or stick with the CR-1.

As far as the Belts - they were done within a few hundred miles of my buying the car. Oh,, and done incorrectly, by a well known shop in the North of Detroit area...  I figured something was wrong because of a vibration in the stick right at 4000RPM. Removed covers and sure enough the lower bal shaft sprocket was off by two teeth. I fixed that and replaced the MISSING PS pump tensioner and the vibration is still there! So I am wondering if maybe both gears are installed 180 degrees off. I also found a number of missing bolts and stripped threads in the camshaft gear housing. Not happy! I will probably post about this in the mechanical area.

What's the deal with the wiring? Are there posts I need to read?

Also have issues with the speed being incorrect for the Rpm and with a few other irregularities. Nothing major, just want to really evaluate what I have.

It is a common thing to get the shafts 180 out, I had to read the instructions 2-3 times

Clarke's has a really good guide it's all about the washers/face plates on the gears
