Hello from Japan

Hello all,



My name is JasperTomo, a middle aged business man living in Tokyo, Japan. Recently I purchased my 2nd Porsche; 1994 968CS. 1st one was a 1983 911SC which I owned for nearly 7years. About 10 years ago, I had to sell the SC for some unavoidable reasons.



Beginning of this year, I decided to drive a Porsche again. Naturally I sought for 930 first, but I noticed they are too expensive and too old for real sport driving.



Then suddenly, possibility of 968 occurred. They should be well-balanced real FR sports cars made by Porsche, and they are reasonably priced, and above all, they must be faster than any 930s (except for 930 Turbos).



After making a thorough search for a good 968, I finally ran across one 968CS 67,000Km which is beautifully black-painted, and it looks really good.



Currently my 968 is under final maintenance. I will start driving it from middle of this month. Hope I will share all of your rich expertise in many area; driving skill, technical knowledge and so on.



At the same time, I like to share with you my driving experiences here in Japan, especially around Mt.Fuji and Mt.Hakone. There are many spectacular and excellent winding roads which really suit for a car like 968s.



Looking for exchanging precious information with you all. Sorry for my poor English.

Welcome - I have just bought my first 968 and my first Porsche. I will be taking it to the shop this week and will be driving it for the first time almost when you get to drive yours for the first time!

Welcome to this forum. I have visited Tokyo many times for business including Mt.Fuji and Mount.Hakone so can understand your comments on driving there. When commuting toTokyo by bus I always think it must be amazing to go out at night (when the traffic is less crazy) and drive on those bridges and roads near/over Tokyo bay that go up to probably the 7th or 8th floor of the surrounding buildings.

Welcome and congratulations on the 968 purchase. I am assuming that it is left hand drive rather than right hand drive? It must be very different driving a left hand drive car in Japan? It always perplexed me that Porsche imported Left Hand drive cars into Japan and I think the Japanese market actually wanted left hand rather than right hand drive cars.



The 968 was classed as the worlds best handling/balanced car, so it could be great on the twisty roads.

I didn't expect but am glad to communicate a person who knows Japan well. Yes, you’re right. It should be a spectacular experience to drive Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway at night. You shall drive from the very heart of Tokyo to the beautiful bay area going through some tunnels crossing over huge bridges.

Yes, mine is left hand drive. Yes, there are very few right hand 968s in Japan. Traditionally driving left hand used to be a symbol of richness and people tended to prefer left. Currently we (at least I believe) have beat this silly concept and majority of imported cars are becoming right.



But there remains another serious reason for us to drive left hand. The pedal layout of some imported right hands are really terrible. Before purchasing my 968, I tried Giulietta, but right hand one’s pedal layout were unbelievably bad.



Driving left hand here in Japan is not that difficult because majority of cars are right hand.

Hello JasperTomo,



Yes we are in the new class together - I would like to see photos of your club sport. I will be posting photos of my 968 as soon as she comes back form the shop. Right now it is still on my flatbed. It is a shame to see it toed down right now, but It was difficult enough to push it onto the trailer once.



After it has had all of it's maintence, I will get it washed up and take some photos by the river and around town.

Finally yesterday, I picked up my 968 and drove about 200km so far. It is really exciting to be able to live with the 968 for long.

I have uploaded several photos and movies that record delivery event at the shop . Hope this entertains some of you.

That look very good. You even have the now very expensive bucket seats. The only thing I would change is the open air filter (is that a K&N cone?) and go back to the original setup.

Thank you for your comments.



According to the shop's guy, previous owner changed air filter and exhaust pipe, and those make the engine response slightly better. Could you tell the reason why you would go back to the original?

Some feel the K&N lets in too much grit and might damage your <acronym title='mass air flow'>MAF</acronym>. All of us with the supercharger run the K&N, and some of us use the "sock" as an additional level of protection.



Now, the heck with those kilometers, go put some *miles* on it! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

I was more concerned about all the hot air this system will draw from the engine bay as there is not seperation between the filter and the exhaust like in the super charger or orginal setup. I am using a K&N panel filter in the original airbox which I have also modified with the additional holes.

My import guy also reccomends agains the K&N filter for some of the same reasons.. I was surprised to say the least.

Depending on how extensively you're willing to search, I believe there is a thread here on K&N filters facts vs myths with solid research and testing data... I've had K&N filets in all of our cars for decades, and I'm even one of those people that neglect to oil it or clean it nearly as often as it should and never had a single problem, with many of the exceeding 250,000 miles. But I'm off topic here ( somewhat ). Welcome to the Forum, my wife and I have visited Japan and absolutely love everything about your country. furthermore I worked for Fujitsu ( in the U.S. Operations part of the company ) for 18 years, so I feel a strong connection to the culture. Last, as much as I love food, and enjoy many ethnic cuisines ( my expanding waistline is unfortunate proof of that ) , in my opinion there is no more diverse, tastier , healthier cuisine than Japansese food. Enjoy the drives for many years and many happy kms to come !!

ds968 and all,



When you are in somewhere abroad, all the people's kindness and warm words are often felt very much enhanced and never be forgotten. I've been to the States several times and had good memories about your culture, food, people and so on.



This forum to me is like my another stay in the States and all of your words are felt that way.



Although I am not representing Japanese culture, as a Japanese it is truthfully thankful to hear someone say good about Japan.



I like to share my driving and ownership experience here in Japan. Hope my posts will entertain some of you, for discovering cultural differences is sometimes interesting.



As for air filter issue, I will search appropriate posts and topics within the forum.
