Hello from Detroit
#1

Hello I'm Ty from Detroit, Michigan. I recently purchased a 1992 Porsche 968. My cousin was the previous owner. After allowing it to sit in his garage for the past 4 years, he finally decided to sell it. I haven't had the opportunity to drive it yet. I decided to have it serviced before running any of the fluids through the motor. It sat for a while and I'm not sure if the old gas and oil would cause problems. If anyone has any suggestions or tips for me please share. Thanks

Welcome Ty,

First tip!

Do not even try to start the car until the Timing Belt and Balance Shaft Belts have been replaced, even if they were done right before the car was stored. These belts degrade over time, regardless of mileage.

Lots of resources here, and a great group of knowledgeable members.

Enjoy the site,

Jay

Welcome Ty, ditto Jay, phone your man and tell him to change the belts at the same time.  You might ask your cousin if he knows about the water pump as it sits behind the belts, so while you're in there .......

Have fun, it's a lovely car and this is a great site Smile  Smile

Welcome, and everyone here will mirror the earlier comments about the belts. The Porsche guidelines were woefully inadequate, and the risk is not worth the benefits. You will have to do them anyway, so do them first and avoid the risk. Bad gas and bad belts are a terrible combination for these engines. Take your time selecting a garage, there are not many mechanics out there that know a lot about these cars.

Once you have posted 5 times you will be able to post pictures, we would love to see what you bought.
