Hello from Chicago
#1

I just bought a 1994 968 cab and am waiting for the timing belt replacement and the usual fluid changes to make it drivable. Praying the tensioner from a 944 S4 will replace the hydraulic tensioner!!

The tensioner RARELY needs to be replaced...this whole NLA thing has gone overboard!

Enjoy the site,

Jay

Thank You Jay!

But you will need to address the alternator to starter wire, that is not a panic, that is a real risk.

Good Luck, and post pictures once you have made the required postings.

Welcome

I wonder who is spouting all this rubbish about tensioner replacement, its not in the shop manual or updates at all, they never go wrong, unless treated incorrectly by a stupid mechanic

Mine is 165,000 miles old and works perfectly, my friend car is at 225,000 and still perfect, the 944S2 (no S4) one wont work there is a missing idler mount

I am just a bit south of you in Naperville.  With the mention of alternator wire, I am doing the battery to starter and alternator cables this week.  It will be interesting how they look after I remove them. I think that they should be in good shape, but not willing to chance it after seeing picture of other cables that have been replaced.

I agree that the tensioner shouldn't cause you any lack of sleep - - unless it's already failed Smile.

Well, since I haven't taken one apart, don't know exactly what the internal parts look like on the tensioner.

However, it seems to be a fairly simple mechanism (some springs and some seals). So, since you can't get them anymore, if it ever fails, it seems you could look for seals of the same type and for the same bore size, etc. & just rebuild it. Not so much more difficult than say honing a brake cylinder...disassembly may be a little more work. Might be able to find a similar part for a different car and modify it too. Not too worried.
