Hefty bill
#1

I had planned on taking her to a shop in Roswell (German Car Specialists), but a wonderful timing belt mishap left me having to settle with closer to home (Performance Services in Opelika, AL). They seem to know 968's enough. They have raced them in the past, as well as a 951 and a couple 911's...

So I got the quote today.

Timing belt and peripherals (incl. water pump, et al.) - $2400
Power Steering pump (?) - $650
Other smaller issues - ~$650

Prices incl. labor for each item. Total of about $3800. I knew the bulk amount was coming, but there's always something else...
Guess I have to wait on the paint job now.

So, when does the stimulus package come out?

No question, just letting the financial shock out through my keyboard....

JC- If you are speaking about German Car Repair in Roswell, you might want to give Alan a call to see if he can help you out. I have taken both of my 968s and an old Mercedes to them and they have always done excellent work.

No fun going north of 2 grand in repairs. Been there and in the end I wish I shopped around a bit more. Assuming the work hasnt yet started, a call to a couple of other shops wont hurt.

Yeah, I have had a couple people tell me they recommend German Car Repair (typo in first post). I had talked to him, but I was going to have a $500 tow bill to get the car up there. These guys in Opelika seem to know the car as well, and they have been excelling in customer service thus far... More to follow.

Curious why they would add a water pump, it doesn't have to be a "while your in there" project since they seem to either work, or not.

Power steering pump, could you buy a rebuild? Not terribly difficult to replace.

I understand trying to keep costs down. Let's me put more goodies in (so at the end of the day I spend just as much, but have more fun)

I defer to our more knowledgeable members...

Regards,

Jay

Finding someone that knows a 968 is worth it. I'm just up the coast from L.A. and there's no one in the area that has experience with the 3L 968 engine or trans. When I had the service done I paid about the same, [~$2300].

It's common to R&R the waterpump during a belt job even if it's working well. Since the labor rate for a P-Car is high it's not cost effective to wait for the pump to fail.
