Headlight Protection
#1

I took a shot from a stone or some other form of road debris that punched a 3/4 inch diameter hole clear through one of my headlight lenses. The lens is heavily fractured and secured with clear packing tape. So I'm heading to Parts Heaven on Monday to see if they have one available.

I found an old thread about headlight protective films and was wondering whether anyone on the forum had any experience or recommendations that were more current?

Chris,

Mine isn't current, but when I got my car, I bought some 3M material that was cut to suit the 968 headlight. It is clear and about 3mm thick. It has been excellent. I haven't seen it on eBay for awhile. I managed to get the film/cover for the headlights and driving/fog lights as a kit. Cannot recommend this stuff highly enough.

Chris, I have a set of headlights I bought off a forum member here but I didn't use them I was going to put the up for sale soon if you're interested.

Edit: these head lights also have the thick protection film on them.

I put the XPel material on my headlights, foglights and turn signals, and I noticed it on a couple other cars during the Paso Robles event. So far, so good. No peeling or clouding of the material, and knock on wood my lenses are OK.

I need something myself. Have trashed the left one twice on this car in three years. Nice replacement ones with shiny reflectors are getting harder to find. On one other 968 for 5 years I never as much as scratched a lens. What's up with that?

Does anyone know if the lens can be removed and the reflector resurfaced?

I've been running headlight protection film for years with no ill affects and also no damage to the lights. Using it on all the front lenses. Highly recommended.

I believe I purchased from Griots maybe 5 or 6 yrs. ago but can't be positive.

Chris:

Sorry to hear about your cracked lense. I recently purchased a lense protection kit for the 968 - film covers for all the front lights, though I have yet to install it. I'm up in Ukiah on business through tomorrow (Tuesday). When I get back I can send you the info on the manufacturer, though the XPel material mentioned above sounds familiar. Your post is just the incentive I need to make time to install the film next weekend, weather permitting.

+1 on the 3M product. I not only have it on my lights but I have had the front, sills and side mirror backs on my car and the wife's 1 series BMW. Out here in the bush the front of a car gets sandblasted, or worse, from the road debris and insect life within 12 months. The only frontal surface that isn't covered is the windscreen, and my insurers have a no cost replacement clause if the screen becomes "unroadworthy". On my old Volvo that saved me about $1200 three times in 4 years.

I put on the Xpel product 2 years ago, beat the crap out of my lights on a track weekend with tons of rocks on the track and everything survived.

At the suggestion of Tama I installed theXpel on the track car. This weekend I'm at Pocono so I will get to see how it works! Saves me the time of putting on the ole duct tape.

Not only did I take a shot through the headlight on the right side, there is a hole of about the same diameter through the grill also on the right side. I'll have to see if I can find what caused it.

Jay go to the site and punch in the information. I just put a 1993 on and am going to order for the 92. This is how I got the kit. You also need a heat gun and a spray bottle of an alcohol and water mix.

Just a suggestion. Do the running lights first just to get the hang of it. Don't burn your self with the heat gun!
