Well done! Nice format too.

As an added note, the 9003 is also known as an H4 bulb. Some packages list both numbers, some don't.

Great work!!! I love seeing all of these DIY articles pop up. Think of the number of Articles we could have had if we had this years ago!!! As Dave said Nice format too.

Thanks, although I feel the world needed a headlight-replacement DIY like it needed one for opening jars. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I'll add that H4 number and replace the pdf.

This is great, thanks.

Is there a list somewhere that has the fuse/bulb designation for all of them? I've spent the last 30 min. looking through the owner's man. and the manuals in PDF but the closest I found was the schematics.

How do these compare to the HID kits?

Hey Larry,

I think the 968 lights are pretty darn good in comparison to HID with just maybe a bulb change out. My wife drives an A6 with HID lights and while they have a much more severe cut-off angle, I don't think they light up the world much better.

Finnish Car Test magazine noted in their Porsche 968 article that 968 got best driving lights on the market by that time. Of course, the reflectors tend to loose their brightness when they get old, but still, I think 968 has very good lights.

My Audi A3 had good lights too, but only after adding two extra 75W rallye lights in front. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I drive on a lot of dark country roads, and have found the lights on my 968 more than adequate.

One thing which irritates me abit is that long distance lights are superb, but normal driving lights arent' that good.
This is irritating espec. when driving in really dark, and you have to switch between long distance and normal lights when there's cars coming and going.

Should get more power to normal lights somehow. Have tried to replace bulbs, but no big success. I've thought to try a separate wiring for lights (from battery), and replace the OEM wiring. this means that I would use OEM wiring only for controlling lights, not to power 'em. this is quite common + cheap trick to improve light power in cars. maybe will do this when darkness falls, in few months . .

See our sponsor at Higher Connections. He has taken over production of the Ice Shark Cable kit and I believe has the light kit as well.

Highly reccomended for these 15 year old cars.

Jay

I don't believe he has the light kit done. I had been bugging him about the light kit for almost a year and finally gave up this Spring. When I was communicating with him, he was saying he would have to include new lenses or something like that for the light kit and the price would be insane for the new lenses. Such lenses weren't part of the original kit so I mentioned that. He was going to look into it. I haven't followed up since and I didn't look into the details of the "lenses".

Maybe if some additional people bug him about the light kit, he'll jump back on it. I'd gladly get the light kit if he were to produce it.

Thanks for the update, I installed the wiring upgrade this spring and I am very happy with it. I also would add the light kit if he decides to make it.

Hey guys-

Sorry it's taken me so long to chime in... I'm actually trying to start some sort of website to help answer questions, etc & am trying to expand into a few other things, but really, the "Higher Connections" name was just something for Flash to put on a banner. I'd like to change it, b/c I'm really just a guy who loves these cars & fell into building battery & headlight cables for them.

I bought a 1988 944 Turbo S in late '99. I really wanted a 968, but they were a lot more expensive then. I met Dan Wray (IceShark) on Rennlist in '01. I never met him in-person, but he'd done some custom work on his 951's headlights, battery cables, & grounds. Several of us prodded him into the headlight thing- I'll outline below. In summer 2004, there were a few underhood fires, due to worn out battery cable insulation, so Dan started making new battery cables. Unfortunately, he died in late 2005- I bought the rest of his inventory & went from there.

The 944 headlight kits- he built a harness w/4awg main power cable, Hella waterproof relays, fuses, ExFlex protective sleeving, 4awg supplemental ground, adj voltage regulator (at 14.4v), Cibie e-code lenses, & Narva H-4 100/90w bulbs. The dif in lighting output was literally about 4X over w/a sharp cutoff (ie- would not blind oncoming traffic if aimed properly)- it all worked together- I'll explain if anyone wants more detail. They basically transformed inadequate lights into excellent lights, comparable to the best on the road in ~2003.

The prob is the cost- the full kit for a 944 is ~$400 & it brings up the lighting output by ~400%, whereas the 968 is ~$640 & brings it's lighting up ~50%, if that... I'd like to see if just adding all of the grounds, an adj volt reg (a bitch b/c you have to get to the alternator) & better bulbs wouldn't help a good bit. The 968 lenses are ~$360/pr! They're ~$130/pr for 944s. The next prob is relays. The Hellas are overkill, maybe, but then, that's what Dan used & I'm trying to find the same ones & will give it just a little more time. Otherwise, I might have to source something different.

Does anyone have any pics of the lense / bulb, close-up? I'll see if I can come up w/some options. If anyone here is really interested in that, I can pursue it. Otherwise, I'll keep looking for the relays, to at least do the harness.

Would anyone here be interested in the harness w/out lenses? Several of you had contacted me about this & I'd mentioned Daniel Stern for lenses. But I could get them for same price & just sell as a kit, but if the thing is, if you converted to a dif bulb w/the harness, I'm wondering if your lense would allow the bulb to fit into it & work...? I've forgotten the style bulb you guys use- is is H004 or something? You guys can all reach me at rkc951 AT yahoo.com

Robby,

Good to see you here. I would be interested in a kit w/o lenses. I am really happy with the wiring harness and know that the light kit would be worth the effort.

I think Anchorman has a llight kit, perhaps not installed (?), maybe he will chime in here.

For anyone that hasn't replaced/upgraded their harnesses, it is money well spent.

Regards,

Jay

I have to agree with Ryan on this,

I have 4 cars currenty. The 968's lighting is better then the other 3 cars (all of which are much newer cars). My Audi A6 4.2 has HID's and it does not light up the road as well as the 968 does.

I'm very content with my lights. My 928 lights, which I'd say were comparable to the 944 were horrible. I would drive the 968 at night and leave the 928. Since I replaced the 928's headlights with Euro lenses and new bulbs it's close to the 968 now. I do have Rob's ground and positive cable kit in the 968, can't recall if it changed the headlights at all.

Also the adjustable voltage regulator is really easy to install in the 968, the backside of the alternator is acessible from the top of the car.
